AAD requirements

I understand that an AAD is required for students, but is it mandantory for people who have attained their A license? How many people jump with AADs that have their A license?

Once you have your A, you can make the choice yourself. With that said, I highly recommend you get one, BUT I just now bought one and have put about 360 jumps on with out the benifit of having an AAD.

Is not mandatory, just advisable, but is up to the skydiver's discretion to have one or not, pretty much.

I work in the pro shop at my DZ, and every recent grad who's bought a rig from me has bought one with a cypres. When I ask them if they want a Cypres, they usually look at me like I'm nuts for thinking they might NOT want one. Hey, you'll probably never need it, but don't you want it in your rig the time you get kicked in the head?

I made my first 400 jumps off student status without one, and never worried. But now that I have one, I don't think I'd go back.

I jumped for many years without one in my personal rig. Now, I do not jump without one. I always taught students they should never jump without one. Jumping without one was hypocritical.

I also used to work at a DZ that required AAD's for all jumpers with anything less than a USPA "C" license. A policy that created a great deal of controversy, but I continue to support.

There are places that require AAD's for all jumpers. I won't get into this controversy - just wanted to point it out in case you decide to travel for jumping in the future.

Outside US: ..."Parachutist" magazine worte that in France ALL skydivers must have an AAD and a square reserve. I believe in Australia ALL skydivers must have either AAD or RSL. I do not think that would fly in the USA, land of freedom

Yeah I have also seen DZ's that require people to have an AAD.

I was lucky my Mother gave me the money for my AAD. All I had to do was promise to never jump w/o one.

It is your decision but I would definitely recommend it. It is not necessarily for your incappabilities but the guy that might take you out. I have been hit under canopy and hit on deployment.

No student should ever jump without one!!!! I wish every license holder would jump with one. But I don't think it should be mandatory. It is the individuals life and they can do with it as they please. Let them live through one scary incident and they will change their mind. The key is will they live through it.

Australia:
Students, A, B and C must use an AAD.
D can use either an AAD or RSL
E & F can choose what they want.

Add to this one other thing...audible altimeters. If I get serioiusly into freefalls, there is no way Im going without one...when youre up there working out, its got to be too easy to lose altitude awareness. Take into account, if you have to be so concerned with it at all times, then you are concentrating less on whatever youre trying to practice.

I have an altimaster-5, and along with that want an audible in the helmet. Anyone got any suggestions on that? Whats good and priced right? May be a while before I need it.

If you ever see someone go in from a no pull, you'll think twice about ever jumping without one.

Also know an instructor who got kicked in the head and went unconscious. The cypres saved his life. If the reserve canopy wasn't a piece of shit, he'd be skydiving still.

I jump with one. It was a gift from a former skydiver. Most expensive gift I ever got, but I did 2500 dives without it. I think my AFF students feel they need one cos if I need one.... well, maybe they do too.

In Holland, it´s mandatory to have an AAD if you don´t have your C yet (min. 200 jumps). RSL mandatory ´till your A.

Dunno, it might even evolve into AAD´s mandatory, period. Although I think even in France and Spain the mandatory AAD can be waived for say foreign CREW jumpers (it was during the european championships in Spain last year).

As a side note, the australian rule of RSL or cypres seems a bit odd (doesn´t make much sense to me) since they are 2 totally different things.
