loughery 0 #1 April 11, 2003 I am looking for some information on packing seminars. I am the chief packer at my DZ and have been teaching people to pack for the past year. This year I would like to begin giving packing seminars in the evening rather than teaching people during the day while there is jumping happening. I was wondering if somone has anything like an agenda or training info that might help me while I decide how I am going to run the seminar. riggerrob 643 #2 April 11, 2003 Most major manufacturers including: Performance Designs, Flight Concepts, Icarus, Precision, etc. have all published packing manuals for their canopies. Several of those manuals are available at their web sites. Just go to www.PIA.com, yellow pages and then look at manufacturers' web sites. By far the best training aid is the "Pack Like A Pro" video marketed by Pier Media. The simplest way to teach packing is to send a junior jumper home with the video, then start hands-on training a few days later. Just remember that different students learn by different methods and they all need plenty of hands-on practice to develop muscle memory. Also consider breaking packing practice into stages. Complete one stage before progressing to the next step. For example, I may demonstrate an entire pack job at the start of a class, but students do not progress beyond line checks until they have done several line checks, enough line checks that they can do them without prompting. Once they have mastered line checks, then I start teaching them how to flake canopies, etc.

SPY 0 #4 April 11, 2003 Hi there! I give the same kind of seminar and I wroted a manual about packing with rules to respect, gear inspection, names of pieces, etc. When I give that seminar, I add more about the equipment in general to give the newbies basic skills about the gear they jump. The goal of the seminar is to give a lot of infos for about 15 persons at a time, show how to "unentangle" (sp?) and demonstrate how to pack and inspect a canopy but people can't practice packing; they have to practice with a more one on one supervision later. I've attached a .pdf version. I assume you can read a bit french as I see in your profile you come from NB. Feel free to use it, but if you ever translate it in english, I would expect to have a copy. PM me if you have any questions or comments or use "traditionnal" e-mail : spbouchard@yahoo.ca Good luck! (By the way I'll be giving that seminar tomorrow...) S-P ===========================

betzilla 56 #6 April 11, 2003 We'll be offering a rigging course in late fall and early spring. We have written testing on site, and the instructor is a DPRE, so you can take the course and leave with your rating. www.para-concepts.com We teach a packing class to the AFP jumpers here. We do one each Saturday night, but if one of the riggers is available and short on cash, they'll teach one anytime. I'm thinking we should change the schedule so that we teach the class Satutrday morning -- that way the student can pack the rig and jump it without having to think about the quality of their pack-job overnight . We use the PD owner's manual as the "study guide."

loughery 0 #8 April 11, 2003 Thank you for your response. I will keep you in mind for when I am ready to take the Rigger Course. I see that in your packing class you give the participants a packing manual is this simply a copy of the PD owner's manual?
