Does your DZ have e-mail Listservs?

Recommended Posts

We (skydive aggieland) just setup two new e-mail listservs, one for announcements and another for chit-chat between people, and started wondering if other DZs did that. I know that most DZs have e-mail lists for announcements, but does your DZ have a chit-chat type list, that everyone can respond to? We are basically trying this instead of a message board, although I know that quite a few DZs have message boards.

What are your thoughts on a forum board vs. using an e-mail listserv?

In Canada CSPA has a chat list that is hosted on a server. Only people that are members of the chat list can send mail to it. you can get info on it at http://www.cspa.ca/cspa/Contact/Website.jsp

I have also set up an address with my service provider and I have it auto forewarded to everyone at my DZ. People were having a hard time keeping track of everyones addresses so now they only have to remember one and everyone gets the mail.

So far this has worked out great but once spammers find out the address I know I will have problems.

I have also set up a yahoo group and invited everyone to join but only 2 people joined.

What I do is when someone new starts jumping regurlary I ask them if they want to be on the list and just add the address.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, our lists are setup where you have to request to be added, even then, in the news list, only a couple people have posting privlages.

The chit-chat (what we named "InflatedWindSock") once you get added, you can post and receive posts. Hopefully this will give us the ability to organize our jumpers a little better, get some cool things done. If not, then it'll atleast give our jumpers a fun thing to do while stuck at the office. How its setup, I doubt that spam will get through to them.

We tried a message board on our website, but it didn't take off very well, not nearly as well as we had hoped, so we're trying this, since for a lot of people, its easier to e-mail then it is for them to go to a message board and navigate that.

We have it here in Colorado. It can go days and days being quiet, then over night, hell breaks lose.

It's a great way to get the word out for events happening in the area.

Message board vs listserve depends on the number of people. For announcements or small number of "chit chatters," I prefer an email list. But when you get a lot of traffic, a message board is a lot nicer. My skydiving club has 2 listserves. One has about 850 people on it, and is just for sending out announcements related to our club. Nearly everyone on it is a whuffo, so I don't let any messages go through that dont relate directly to the club. We try to keep the traffic on that one to a minimum. The other list is for the members only. It's unmoderated so anyone can send a message, but it's gotten big enough that we need to think about what we send and decide if everyone really needs to see it or not.

I had originally set up a message board for the members, but it got no traffic because it was inconvenient and "out of sight, out of mind."

I'm on another listserve for pilots in the DC area. I've suggested to the admin to go web based a number of times, because it's gotten to the point where people are afraid to post because they know they'll be clogging so many people's email addresses, and if they are off topic they'll get yelled at by the admin. He has the idea that message boards are hard to use and slow, so he wont do it. I actually pointed him to dropzone.com to see what a model message board looks like.

my DZ hosts 2, one for jumper related info, and one for jokes.

The theory being the main one is for the "wheres everybody jumping this weekend" the other for the crap nobody wants to get!

BUNGE

I don't hate them, I just like us better.
