HARD toggles

I found something interesting this past weekend, I put a couple of jumps on this 200ft canopy, and the turns were HARD AS HELL!!!, I felt like a wimp not being able to bring the toggles all the way down to make a sharp turn, and flaring for landing, oh boy, what a pain in the ass....literally. [:/]

What's the problem?

Mmmmm...I jumped the same canopy twice and was hard, smaller canopies are harder to steer?? [:/]

Well let me tell you, when I did my first tandem (long time ago) the TM let me steer, he was kinda 'hefty' plus my weight, and the toggles were easy...I'm baffled. :S

Some tandem mains are semielliptical which makes steering very easy.

Some canopy designs have hard toggle input, others have hard front riser input others have increased rear riser input force. Best thing to do is to hit a gym or do CRW. If after 5 CRW jumps if you can lift your arms above your head your not doing something right.

You got me, man. Last weekend I did 3 jumps back to back on 3 different canopies which gave me a great basis for comparison. The sabre 190 main has medium-hard pressure. I have to do basically a one armed pullup on the toggles to get it to spiral. Next was a 218 reserve. I was a bit busy on that flight but it had very easy toggle pressure. After that was a borrowed student rig with a skymaster 230 in it which had toggle pressure so easy and light it was ridiculous. Granted it was like flying a school bus with zero performance and cornering, but easy to fly. This is giving me the impression that when I get down to a 150 it'll be a hard pull to make it corner....bigger the canopy/easier the toggle pull? Just my impression....limited experience means I could be wildly wrong about other canopies. my .02$

That's also my question, I'm getting soon a Sabre2 150, and I'm wondering if I'm gonna have the same issue. I might ask my rigger to get me a 150 DEMO and jump it and see what happens.

you should do this anyway, weather to find out about the toggle pressure or not. you should try everything in that range of canopy's before buying it. you never know, you may hate the sabre 2, but love the safire 2, or the pilot (from aerodyne, which has been getting review that people like it better than the sabre 2)

I Just hope you demoed the sabre 2 150 before buying it. similarly hope you've jumped something in it's size range in advance before purchase. not every canopy is for everyone, like skygod said, and it's a lot of money to spend "blindly."

Wussy. Try jumping a 500 sq ft F111 tandem canopy with a 100 lb girl hanging in front of you... Can you say "it's gonna take all three of us to flare this biatch?" ;)
