Casch 0 #3 June 5, 2003 Alright, first off, I know NOTHING about BASE...well compared to others such as Tom Aiello. But here is my understanding of the difference. First off, the most obvious. No reserve canopy. There's very little use for a reserve as most base jumps are done from an altitude where a reserve deployment is all but impossible. BASE rigs are built to open FAST. Different sized pilot chutes are used depending on the lenght of the delay. In a short delay, generally you would use a larger P/C because of the lower airspeed. In a longer delay, you'll use a smaller P/C so that the opening doesn't hurt like a biatch! BASE canopies are very different from skydiving canopies. I can't tell you the specific differences, but they are designed to open as fast as you want them to open. Different packing techniques can be used to design the perfect opening for your exit point. These are the VERY BASIC differences from a total BASE NOOB. Take it with a grain of salt, and just savor the information until one of the local pro's get's here.
