Ummmm. go find some rapids and REALLY enjoy the raft??

Seriously white water rafting is as much fun and likely more dangerous than a raft dive. I highly reccommend the experience. I will, however, defer to others on how to get one to 'float' in the air.

Happy 100th ... and don't forget to bring clean clothes for after the pie-ing

Yeah... stay low in the door, have the pilot slide the plane a bit and hold on for a wild ride. Its a lot like getting a skyboard out, slide it out very smooth.

I've never done it personally out of an Otter (have lots of CASA raft jumps) , but have looked at a few videos of what works and what does'nt. Make sure you have some one that knows how to fly with a raft on the plane at least. Don't fully inflate the raft, pressure differences and all ;)

Couple years back jumpers told the pilot to launch the raft out of an otter by giving them some negative Gs. They launched and some jumpers hit the tail. Bad deal. Could have been worse had someone gotten killed. Fortunately no one did. So let's not give advice when we haven't done it before.

So, since I have flown a raft dive out of an otter I will say that you don't need to float anything. They can plant the raft on the door frame slightly angled aft. When ready the outside jumpers just leave and drag it out. Seems to work fine. There's no guarantees but it's a safe exit rather than floating anyone into the horizontal stabilizer.

I was refering to sliding the plane, not zero g-ing the plane. I've spent my time on the roof of a plane when the pilot over G-ed us and its not fun at all. Its kicking the rudder right to do that?

Thanks, that is kind of what i was invisioning, but i am going to let the more experience jumpers involved really decide.

Now, just pray for good weather all weekend

No, the pilot should not be skidding the airplane either. If he does then the airflow around the plane (and around the jumpers about to launch) will be changed. Most likely there will be less airflow right out the door and I think they would want to present the bottom of that raft to the relative wind pretty quickly to not get it too vertical right out the door. Then again, coming out of a tailgate it goes a bit vertical and still flys out. So, I don't know. I just know that trying to get skydivers to launch on the same timing the pilot shoves the controls sets up a potential for injury to the jumpers. They should not do it.

I've done it successfully three times out of an otter, the way we did it was to put three in the door, the raft sorta inside between the three and a fourth person actually inside, we then sorta just wrestled it out the door - it worked everytime...

We've launched many, many raft dives from an otter. We learned our Zero-G lessen (see DiverDriver post) when someone's foot hit the tail as he passed under it. We now launch pretty much by just hauling the thing out the door now.

Plenty of pre-dive planning should include exit practice w/ count. Who's in, Who's where on the outside. Don't wrap your hand with the little rope. When & how to bail out.

Be Safe. Have Fun.

Advise...don't do it ! Not out of an Otter !

It was tried a few year back by people I know and it ended with some broken ribs when one guy ended up bent over the tail.

Yah, cuz the pilot tried to float them out the door. Riiiiiigght? It can be done safely with a normal jumprun and no action from the pilot.
