New to Skydive- taking AFF in San Diego

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone
Well, I got a challenge a month ago from bigheaded people telling me I would not be able to jump from a plane.
Guess what, I am not a big headed one but I couldn't take their Sh.. anymore. Thus, instead of taking the tandem and static as they did, I took the freefall one thinking it would be more challenging. Hey, I was not good at all, sorry for
Jennifer and Gregg (best skydiver' coach in SD) who had to deal with me, but I did jump and I am proud of it.

Now, here is the problem, I want to jump again to see if I am able to do it with a clear mind (I didn't think at all when I jump the first time, blank brain, no thoughts passing through).

I have decided to take the AFF and go even further since this thing is taking my brain big time.

I do not want to bother any of you, but I have to say that although I had no fear nor even any sensation while taking off from the plane, I am a little concerned about the fact that my body was extremely unstable on the air ( I watched the VHS so many times and saw my legs moving all over, although I arched, my body was so unstable). I think Gregg did a good job trying to get me in the right posture but what if I am alone and can't control my movement ? Also, when Jen pulled out the ripcord, Gregg had to shake up my body in order to open the canopy... that scared me..... can somebody tell me why this happened and how to handle this situation when you are by yourself ?

Q/A : Should I always jump with the same coach (I am planning of taking the AFF + 5 to 10 coach jumps) ?

What are the advices you can give me mental wise ?
Any advices on body position, stability, landing is also appreciated.

Do you think that anybody can jump (like me) ? how did you know you were meant to be a skydiver ?

Hey, just asking..... Thanks to all who will take their time to answer.

Ps : Sorry for my bad French !

Bisous

Jackie

Hey Nebula,

Sounds like you've been bitten! Don't beat yourself up over not being stable on your AFF I. The whole point of that jump is to get you acclimated to freefall. You will have plenty of opportunities to hammer out stability issues, and more often than not, it seems to be something that just "clicks." On one jump, you'll finally realize that relaxing=stability. I know that on most of my early jumps I found it rather amusing that my instructors suggested I try to relax while my body is hurtling at the ground at 120 mph. But it really does work!

I wouldn't say that skydiving is for anyone, but if you are a skydiver, you'll know it! Forget those elitist posts in Talk Back. If you are a skydiver, you're a skydiver and fuck what anyone else thinks.

Welcome to the skies! And to the forums! It's a wonderful place to be.

Welcome to the sky! :)
Don't beat yourself up over your first jump - or any other jump you think you messed up on. I know some world class skydivers who didn't pass at least one of their AFF levels. You jumped out of a plane, pulled and landed. You did great, and you'll do great on your next jump too.

Relax. Breathe. Smile.

Spend as much time as possible on the ground learning about skydiving - these forums, the gear and safety sections of this website, hanging out at the dz are all good places to feed your brain. The more you know about what you're doing, the easier it will be for you to control the fear (will also help to lessen the "blank brain" in freefall).

Again, welcome to the sport! Hope to see you up at Perris when you get your A license and can come out and play with others. B|

Otay uses throwouts, not ripcords. When Jen deployed for you, the PC probably landed on your back (it's hard to throw well from main side) and Greg rotated you upright so the PC caught air. If you pull on your own it won't be as big a deal - you'll probably have a better launch. But if it does happen, count to 5, twist and look over your shoulder. (They should have covered this in the FJC.) That action will clear the PC as your body twists.

I would say no. Overall you can learn more from jumping with several different coaches. Although if you find one you really seem to "click" with it may be worth sticking with them.

Hey, if I could make it through static line, anyone can skydive.
