riggerrob 643 #1 July 13, 2003 An aspiring tandem instructor recently came to me with this dilemma. The problem seems to be the difference between Canadian and American methods for certifying new coaches and instructors. The nearest Vector Tandem Instructor Examiner has said that a CSPA Coach 1 rating (roughly equivalent to USPA BIC) is enough, provided that he is a "certified" Coach 1. Herein lies the dilemma. The guy only recently took the Coach 1 Course, and has not yet completed the 50 or so coaching contacts that he needs to be a fully certified Coach 1. The difference is that CSPA does not believe that simply attending a course is not enough to turn a candidate into a coach/instructor/rigger overnight. CSPA insists that a new coach or instructor jump with "x" number of junior jumpers or students before he can become a fully certified coach or instructor. How do we convince the Vector Tandem Examiner that "coaching contacts" with tandem students will be sufficient to complete this guy's Coach 1 rating? Note that the tandem candidate plans to work under the supervision of one of the most experienced skydiving instructors on the West Coast of Canada. sducoach 0 #2 July 13, 2003 You need to be talking to RWS or the RWS IE and who will hold the course for him along with the USPA. First of all, the Canadian Coach/Instructor programs are much more demanding, structured, and professional than ours in the USA. However, RWS and the USPA are the only ones that can answer your question. Although, I'm sure you'll see many "suggestions" in this format. mikeat10500 12 #3 July 14, 2003 I'm in the same boat. I need a "C" license for a Tandem rating. I should have got it 5 years ago when it was easy. Now I need 100 4 ways, style time in 1.5 sec,and 300 jumps into shark infested water or something. But what can you do? ...mike----------------------------------- Mike Wheadon B-3715,HEMP#1 Higher Expectations for Modern Parachutists.
