crosskeys update

Recommended Posts

Two jumps today and now it's pouring. We're waiting to see if it will clear. First jump has the usual problems w/aircraft and timing; second jump came within a few grips of the state record. We transitioned to the second point for practice but most people thought it was the breakoff key and just left. (D'oh!) Status of various people:

Amy - no longer hypoxic
Molly - excited
Roger - still barefoot
Mary - not jumping but running around with a clipboard

Last night there was a little excitement with a stolen backhoe and a (now-flat) drop zone truck, but that's a whole other story.

> You overlooked Kallend. What's that guy doing?

Getting in Molly's way on exit. Other than that, not being noticed, which means doing pretty well on a big way.

Update - made one more jump from 18K, but we had one sector "fall out" when a wave went through it. I had a great view as it happened right in front of me. One of the reason I like swoop cords - I popped them out as three people slid under me and stayed right there.

There was also a fun (but frantic) few minutes trying to fix the O2 system on the Casa; one side of the plane got no O2 when we first turned it on. A hose to the left side manifold had gotten kinked when they changed the tank, but we got it unkinked.

We tried six times today and came within 1-2 people of the state record. All jumps were from 17.5K AGL with O2. We'll make four more jumps tomorrow - looks like we're continuing in the Roger tradition of getting the record on the last day.

After today people are pretty wiped out. There's a party at Roger's tonight; we'll see how late it goes.

Thanks for the update Bill. I am from the Northeast and a few of the folks from the local DZ's were down there this weekend (Jumptown and CPI).

For us 'new to big way' folks, can you explain what types of problems were happening so we can learn from them.

Thanks!

Everyone on our plane (right rear-rear-rear trail) docked on every jump, usually by 10k! Our sector completed 13 times out of 13.:)

A lot of people (even near the base) were wearing big suits or tee-shirts over their jumpsuits. Thinking "slow" becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I noticed that Molly was wearing sleeves!

I reckon it was about 10mph slower than Guy Wright's 120 way at Z Hills over Easter, and about 2/3 of the jumpers were common to both.

Hey, you forgot about me>:(

I guess I'm just not good enought to mention.

Just not one of "yesterday's slackers", maybe.;)

Never a slacker. Was always on time and didn't leave till I was told.

>Will someone post information about the attempt . . .

It came close a few times; on one dive we were one grip away from the first point, and on another we were one grip away from the second point. We had some problems with weather (13 jumps instead of 16 due to rain) aircraft (had some O2 problems, some positioning problems) and a few incidents (one reserve deployment on the step, one cameraman who hit his head on the tail.) In general it didn't seem to be coming together as well as last year's attempt; there were more problems in more areas overall.

Fall rate was one issue. 75% of the problems were due to people going low or not being able to stay with the formation after they docked. I started out with my minimum fall rate setup (sleeves and swoop cords) and had no problems, but then I'm used to Roger's fall rates. A lot of people had to start adding t-shirts and sleeves as the event wore on.
