Shadowplay 0 #1 July 14, 2003 I'm on level three and so far have used...I think 230 canopy size. I don't know much about this subject, but my question is will the canopy size stay the same during all my student jumps, is it a preference thing, and what is the first thing I'll notice when I go down in size? Blahr 0 #2 July 14, 2003 You will probably stay on the same equipment for the duration of your training and up till you get your A. ITs not a preference thing while you are a student. They put you on what they think is best for your weight and experience. You wont really have any say in the matter. After 2 jumps I dont think you are quite ready to downsize Smaller will go faster and turn more quickly, lose more altitude in turns, faster vertical descent rate.etc. Larger canopies (lower wing loading) are much more forgiving of mistakes. deadbrowncow 0 #3 July 21, 2003 Well, at this point in your skydiving career, the last thing on your mind shouuld be downsizing. Fly the rigs they are teaching you on and learn how to fly and land them. With experience, you will be ready to downsize soon enough. Don't get drawn into that superswoop/hookturn mentality now. Those jumpers you see swooping in and doing the "cool stuff" probably have quite a few hundred jumps at least and would probably tell you the same. Too many people go too small too fast and end up with bones that are too broken.***"A smart person can act dumb, but a dumb person can't act smart"***
Fast 0 #4 July 21, 2003 I am doing the student thing right now. All I can say is that I'm VERY happy that I have a nice huge (I think im using a 290) canopy for landings. I just had my first standup (on my L4 jump) and it takes quite a bit of coordination even with the large canopy to stand it up. Where im jumping, I'll be on student gear till I am getting proficient with that, then I will be on transition gear, which will be smaller and differnt material, but that won't happen for quite a bit. I wouldn't want to jump anything smaller than the huge student gear anyways... don't have enough experience. vonSanta 0 #5 July 21, 2003 Skydived at a local DZ that is commercial and outside the Danish Parachute Association. Got to try a Sabre 190 (i.e non student rig) and liked it a lot more than the 230-280 student rigs. Different landing technique but much more fun, and I managed to land and stay on my feet on all 6 skydives. And I loved not having to close the container with a springloaded pilot chute underneath...' Gonna get my own rig ASAP. Really hate those spring loaded farkers. Most Canadian DZs stopped strapping spring-loaded main pilotchutes to students 20 years ago.
