Tonto 1 #2 August 29, 2003 Superdave bust his fib. Had it put in a fibreglass cast. Jumped, landed, ran - skipped - fell over and broke his arm. Much laughter! Superdave moved away and now jumps at SDC. No casts at JSC unless the jumper has over 1000 dives and upsizes apropriatly. If its an arm, I want to see cutaway drills in the suspended harness. It amazes me that people can be dumb enough to hurt themselves - and then are dumb enough to jump while injured. I speak from experience. Read my post in the femur club thread. tIt's the year of the Pig.
pa2themd 0 #3 August 29, 2003 Hiya T, I am with you on that!! I don't see any good coming out of removing the cast early or jumping with it on...surely there are stability problems?? It will only cause further delays in jumping, should there be a complication see ya tomorrow "Most of us can read the writing on the wall; we just assume it's addressed to someone else!" Spike 0 #4 August 29, 2003 I wasn't there so this is x hand but I recall that the camera flyer with the Hinton 8 crw team bust her leg on the first round of competition over in Spain last year. Sarah continued jumping through the competition filming the crw and landing arse first on the accuracy tuffet. Unusual circumstances and Sarah was braver than me. Even with the availability of a tuffet I would have worries about landing off. All in all I think jumping in a cast is a bad idea. In my own case, roll on November. Erroll 80 #5 August 29, 2003 Tonto, I remember doing a coached jump with Bailey Edmunds after he bust his leg at Pilanesburg. He had been swooping the pool and came short, if I remember correctly (must have been about '92 or '93). I still had to pull his one bootie over his cast just before exit. He flew like the pro he is and he landed like a butterfly!
Tonto 1 #6 August 29, 2003 Are you sure that wasn't Long Pete? He did his foot swooping the pool at Pilansberg in 92, smacking it on the far side and nearly taking it off cos the water level had dropped in the week but he still wanted to get his feet wet. Got loaded in Cam's 210 and zipped through to JHB bleeding all over the upholsry. Bailey's feet just look fucked. I remember when he did his spine at Mark's Park and the medivac chopper came to get him. The doc gets out and says "My God! Look at his feet!" Some dude had to explain that that's the way they looked, and his spine was the problem. Either way, we're talking about dudes who had in excess of 6000 dives when that happened. Big difference between that and a 100 jump wonder. tIt's the year of the Pig.
Fast 0 #7 August 29, 2003 I know a couple of people where were jumping before thier casts where completely off, but this was the last week or so of having them on, and they both upsized a lot, and have 1000+ jumps.~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. steve1 5 #8 August 29, 2003 I've skydived with my arm in a cast (that I broke rodeoing or was it logging?)......(I never said I was smart). This was back in the days of shot and a half capewells. My National Guard unit wouldn't let me jump with it though. I tried, but they said that would be a no no.......Steve1
betzilla 56 #9 August 29, 2003 My boyfriend jumped in his walking cast (he called it a juping cast) quite a bit with his broken foot. BUT, he was extremely experienced, and had his landings dialed in. Even then he knew he was taking a huge risk. He was taking AFP students and would say, " there's one extra rule on this jump: if you step on my foot, you fail."
billvon 3,107 #10 August 29, 2003 As I recall, Don Swayze tried that after he broke his foot BASE jumping. He injured it again on landing and they had to amputate at least part of it.
chuteless 1 #11 August 29, 2003 many times. Once had a castr put on a broken wrist monday morning and I removed it monday night and kept right on jumping. I had a cast on my ankle ( to the knee) and removed it over a period of several weeks. I once had a doctor freak out big time because I wouldnt let him put a cast on my other ankle. He made a notation in the hospital log book and sent me off. I had a doctor in a Toronto hospital want to put a screw in my ankle...I told him to screw off, put a "small" cast on it, and I'm on my way. they screamed at me, becaiyuse I was telling them how to do their job....most of them use us for practice in ways not necessary. many casts on, and kept jumping. I broke five bones in my foot and walked on it for three days before Xrays revealed the damage. I left the hospital the same way I went in..no cast...no bandage, but my big toe sticks out 1/2 inch too far now. I can still run and do all I have to. Erroll 80 #12 August 29, 2003 You are quite correct. It was indeed Long Pete (checked my logbook - hey, it was 10 years ago!). Of course, Pete (and Bayley) were pro's, with gizzilions of jumps. I agree completely - with their numbers landing with a cast is not such a big deal. I noticed that Bayley and his team yet again took top honours at the SA's. Haven't heard much about Pete in recent times.
usedtajump 1 #13 August 29, 2003 Go ahead and jump, and maybe get away with it. I've only had one friend die and another reinjure himself very seriously by jumping too soon with casts on.The older I get the less I care who I piss off.
