Whiny Leg Burn Question

Recommended Posts

I'm curious how much I can look forward to annoying leg burn on the insides of my legs after every jump? I'm still in AFF (completed level 4) and after every jump I'm walking around like I just spent 4 hours on a horsie. I'm wondering if tightening my leg straps would help or letting them stay a little looser would help. My student rig is a 300 (I weigh about 210, do you think that's too big?) and someone told me that with those types of rigs it's unavoidable. If that's the case can someone recommend something to alleviate the pain? I usually jump with a pair of exercise pants that are pretty comfortable to lounge around in on the ground while I'm waiting for the blasted weather to clear up (as well as all the tandems to go home...). Thanks!

I had the same problem as you on a few jumps. I found that when my leg straps are too tight my legs get burned. It might also have to do with body position?? I also found that when leg straps too tight I cannot reach slider to stow, ans its completely down the lines. Very strange..

There are a few factors coming into play here.
First and foremost you are jumping student gear. Most student gear (while safe) is worn out and older. The leg pads are narrow and worn out.
The gear also does not generally fit properly (for comfort).
Another factor is how tight or loose your harness is on you, and where your container sits on your back.
If your container is sitting low (the laterals are sagging), then when you deploy it moves up (because now it is suspended under the canopy). This movement is causing most of your discomfort.
Wearing the container high on your back (so the laterals are straight), and having the harness quite snug (where it restricts you from dearching alot) will help.
Another factor is your experience level, it is unlikely you have the best body position at deployment time. This will get better. If you go head-down at all, you are asking for more opening shock.
The packers at your dz also may be packing "brisk" student openings for student gear. This quick/hard opening is generally preferred to a snivel as students can mistakenly identify a snivelling canopy as a malfunction.
I am not saying that this will solve all your problems, but this is a good place to start. When you buy your own gear (especially if you get custom), you will be pleasantly surprised with the comfort.

I had the same problem when I was jumping the student gear at my DZ. When I switched to the transition sport gear (Vector 3M) it all went away. In fact, the only time since student gear that I ended up with sore legs was jump 19, it was a slammer and a half, but other than that the non-student rigs are quite a bit better for comfort.

you'll be fine once you get your very own rig made just for your own legs. When its made for you its like you have nothing on it fits so well:)
