SniperCJ 0 #1 August 17, 2003 ...at 4000ft after filming a tandem deployment. Pitched out and started spinning on my back. Looked up and saw a nice little lineover closing off the left 4' of my canopy. Dicked around with it briefly before deciding things just wernt going my way and look-right-grab, look-left-grab, strip-right-sweep, strip left sweep...See ya! Couple seconds later im under a nice white PD143R. Stand up landing in the peas and jump 737 goes into the books as a success. Yaa Haw! JC
masher 1 #2 August 17, 2003 How did your reserve fly? Just asking, because I've got the same, and I haven't flown it yet. . Yes everyone will tell me to demo, but demos don't exist outside of the States...-- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Casch 0 #4 August 17, 2003 Quote...look-right-grab, look-left-grab, strip-right-sweep, strip left sweep...See ya!" Ok when you were doing the cutaway, were you actually saying that in your head? I mean, I know what to do, but instead of saying it, I just produce the idea which is a lot faster...they kept telling me to say it out loud during the two handle training and I was like...there is no way I'm going to wait to say all that crap in the air, so why do it on the ground??? I'm just a little curious....
 Designer 0 #5 August 17, 2003 Cool. It,s always great when things as trained! No, truth be told,,,it was way faster than that. Like you said,,,produce the idea and act. More like "simultaneous grab,,sweep right. sweep left" Its done that way on the ground to build that muscle memory, since actual building of that muscle memory would be real costly at $50 a repack.
 trumpetfish 0 #8 August 18, 2003 this is no doubt a silly question but how come you were spinning on your back after deployment? As I imagine the situation, wouldn't you either be belly down spinning or 'under canopy' and spinning ? I was doing a tandem the other day and when I looked down saw a guy with what appeared to be a lineover. I watched him chop it. The student and I flew over it so I could "mark" where the main was. I did get to show the student the how the cutaway results in a reserve and that the skydiver was over "there" under his reserve. Must be nice to get a chopper to go find your main...
 Kris 0 #11 August 18, 2003 Sometimes you can clear a lineover by going into deep brakes on a canopy. If you're lucky, the brake line will slide off of the top of the canopy. My personal rule in case of a lineover is to try to clear it once. If the canopy is wildly unstable then I will chop. If it is flying somewhat stable (by adding opposite toggle, etc...) and I have the altitude and a near place to land, I will try to cut the brake line with my hook knife and land with rear risers.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
 SniperCJ 0 #12 August 18, 2003 Quote"dicked around with it"... im new to the sport so bare with me on this...you were actually trying to clear the mal first? thought with that type you just go for silver right away? Not a bad question at all. Yes, I tried to clear it for a bit (when I say a bit, I mean, "not long at all"). A couple of point: - a lineover isnt an automatic cutaway. They can be cleared in some circumstances by pumping the risers. Looking back at the video, I really think I could have cleared it, however I'm not going to second guess myself on this one. - This wasnt my first rodeo. With 2 previous cutaway in the books, I felt comfortable working with it. I had altitude and a mostly inflated canopy that wasnt spinning violently. Trumpetfish: When I said spinning on my back after deployment, I did mean "under canopy and spinning". Looking at the video I wasnt in a really violent spin on my back, mighta just felt that way... Go for silver?? We are talking a partial malfunction here, so no, you would absolutely not "go straight for silver"; you would positively first cutaway the malfunctioned main. That said, there are instances, especially under larger canopies, where it's totally possible to clear a lineover. It is not, however, generally possible to un-fuck a sub-100 square foot elliptical fast enough to keep it from spinning completely up on you.
