Q about smoke safety in the plane

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer: I am not going to play or jump with any smoke devices any time soon. I just thought about them and realized I had a big question. (And I didn't see an immediate searchable answer in this forum.)

Question: How is safety of smoke devices inside the airplane achieved? It seems to me that in the plane, if a smoke device activated it could cause/contribute to the worst kind of accident.

I don't know details about activating smoke devices, but if they're easy to activate as you go out the door (or on the hill), it seems like there would be a nonzero risk of accidental activation similar to clearing a pin in the confines of the plane.

1. Tape the pin down so it can't be accidentally activated.

2. If you are going to use an extension, don't attach the extension until just before exit.

3. Make sure the jumpers with smoke are near the door so they can hang a foot if one goes off prematurely.

4. Do not fire them off until the canister is outside the plane. You can do it in freefall, or just get your foot out the door (either by sitting on the lip or by floating.)

Man, I love skydiving. The more I learn about it and the different stuff you can do, the more I learn about danger / potential danger.

So, a followup question for further readers: does anyone / do groups jump smoke out of a C-182 or a similar sardine tin? "near the door" becomes more sketchy in that case. For safety, I can see the pilot requiring you stow your smoke device on the step before entering the plane and put it back on outside. ;)

Done that a few times. On a "standard" C182, have the guy with smoke be in JM position; if you want two jumpers to have smoke, have him and the guy in student position. Guy in JM position has it on his right foot, other guy on his left foot. If there's a premature firing you can open the door and get that foot out. On exit, the "JM" puts one foot out, fires the canister, and gets out and hangs (or keeps one foot on.) "Student" puts left foot out on the step, fires his smoke, then climbs out the rest of the way.

I would think you'd risk dropping the thing - and that seems like it would be a danger to people on the ground.

I wasn't serious. I meant it in the same vein as a pilot saying "Smoke canisters? Well, I hope you brought enough for everyone!" ;)
