Tailgate 0 #1 September 11, 2003 Just read an interesting article on Cross country (http://www.afn.org/skydive/sta/dta/cross.txt). Does anyone have experience with a cross country and know af a place to do such a thing? Since I am still very "wet behind the ears" I probably won't be doing it soon but it intrigues me, I love the float down and this just sounds immensely cool. _________________________________________________ Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend to man- Sam Walter Foss
Harksaw 0 #2 September 11, 2003 I was always wondering, is it legal in the US to let out jumpers a long distance from where the notam says they are landing, if everyone fully intends on landing in the proper place?__________________________________________________ I started skydiving for the money and the chicks. trigger 0 #3 September 11, 2003 I would also be interested in crosscountry canopy flight and where i could participate in such an activity, but more specifically in the sunny UK. Problems i see are with air traffic control though..CHOP WOOD COLLECT WATER.
CanuckInUSA 0 #4 September 11, 2003 I'm not sure what they may have done in terms of NOTAMS (Besty might know because she sort of organized it), but last year at the Eloy Holiday boogie, I did my first cross-country jump and it was an awesome learning experience and for sure will be doing it again this year if/when the opportunity arises. AggieDave 6 #5 September 11, 2003 I've done quite a few cross country canopy jumps, the only thing that we have ever had to do is just alert the ATC of what we're doing and let local traffic know what we're doing. Now, where to do one? At a DZ, just ask around, if the uppers are honk'n people sometimes like to do it, since its fun to go long distances under canopy. My personal record from 11k is 9 miles and I landed on the DZ.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
AndyMan 7 #6 September 11, 2003 The sunset load at chicagoland is frequently a cross country. I've gotten out 10 miles away at times. It's not a huge thing, but you'll need to wait until you've got your 'a' licence, and be sure to talk to your instructors first. You also need to be comfortable with the idea of landing off. The tough part is figuring out where to get out. Bring a cellphone... I frequently joke that I'm planning on landing in the parking lot of the local restaurant a few miles down the road... _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. Plummet 0 #9 September 12, 2003 The cool way to do it is to get out straight up over the drop zone. Then let the wind take you and see how far away you can get.-Jeff. http://www.iplummet.com Common sense and common courtesy are NOT common.
Squeak 17 #10 September 12, 2003 I've done a couple. we get some really good uppers here The last one I did was from about 18 miles out, from 14000, back at the DZ with 6000 to spare, 60 knott uppers are great, 10 knot ground winds are great tooYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
