mikkey 0 #1 September 10, 2003 Incident from the APF September News Sheet: "Student with 16 jumps on St 8. Lost height awareness on the track and pulled low. Did not get control of the canopy for some time and landed off DZ in a cane field. Despite 10 jumpers trying to find her, student then sat in the cane for 2 hours with no attempt to walk out until a rescue helicopter found her." --------------------------------------------------------- When people look like ants - pull. tattoojeff 0 #2 September 10, 2003 sounds like shes barley qualified to be a thinking person let alone a skydiver. last month myself and a few other skydivers just made it back from a long spot. we were at the far end of the runway. our runways about 3/4mile with the dz facilitys in the middle. as im gathering up my canopy i watched this low time jumper take a seat on the grass. i asked her if she was hurt, she replied no im waiting for someone to pick us up,arent they going to send a car!!! call me an asshole but that is a personality type not suited for skydiving. unwillingness to help themselves. wmw999 2,584 #3 September 10, 2003 I had a student cut away from a canopy spread over a 3' tall weed. I'd told him that if it was stuck in a tree and his feet were touching the ground, he could cut away and go for help. The fact that he was 50 feet away from manifest didn't help his case. Based on that, and on his general exhibition of the brain power of a gnat, we invited him to consider other sporting entertainment. pilotdave 0 #5 September 10, 2003 Eh, unless he let the RSL fire his reserve, is cutting away on the ground that big a deal? Stupid, yeah, but stupid enough to quit the sport? Dave
wmw999 2,584 #6 September 10, 2003 It was that combined with the rest of his performance. He had an RSL, but I don't remember if he was jumping conventional gear (could be disconnected) or the SOS piggybacks we got later. slotperfect 7 #7 September 10, 2003 Obviously a significant event for both student and instructors . . . I'm glad it turned out well. The number one thing I like about teaching skydivers (AFF and Tandem) is introducing others to the sport that I love. The rest of the staff at Raeford is that way so the attitude is infectious in a very forwarding way. A close second in the "reasons I love to teach" list is the responsibility. I thrive on it. It is a honor to have others trust me with their lives (in a manner of speaking) and to have the responsibility of holding their fragile entry into this awesome sport in my hands is an honor as well. For these instructors I say "Well done!" And to the student I say "get it on!" Time for her to get the off her back! Arrive Safely John

Jasmin 0 #10 September 12, 2003 In the last 20+ years, I've seen a few DCBM's.... "Don't come back monday!!" Although my favourite has to be the guy at one of the last quincy's who walked back from the landing area with his freebag showing and then tried to argue that it wasn't, and that the tube stow around his reserve handle (to stop it dislodging on the way tot he dz) wouldn't have stopped him pulling his reserve....despite the fact he couldn't dislodge it when asked to prove it....xj "I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with the earth...but then I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with a car either, and that's having tried both." Tonto 1 #11 September 12, 2003 I've had 2 memorable ones... 1. Student cut away at about 600 ft. RSL got the reserve. landed with toggles stowed on both canopies. Reason. Slider was not "Directly over his/her head." "It was like 2 feet away? On top of the black things like you showed us? Oh yeah... Sorry..." 2. Student landed about 2 miles away after indicating the radio was functional. (Kick your legs if you can hear me.. (Kick, kick, kick) Turn LEFT!) Silly me. The student was turning to face left in the harness. Just had not bothered to put his/her hands in the toggles and pull the left toggle down to turn left... Golf. Golf is good.
