Safire 2

Recommended Posts

Someone said that Icarus uses a weird system for their canopy sizes. So a Safire 2 149, for instance, may not actually be 149 square feet, but much smaller. Can someone confirm and explain?

I demoed a Safire 2 149 today. I flew it fine, landed standing up and right on my target, no problem handling it in any amount of breaks, no unexpected diving, etc. A wonderful ride. Before putting down a wad of hard earned cash on one, could you guys tell me the approximate differences between the Safire 2 and the Sabre 2? Demoing is a little problematic, and quite expensive, here in Canuckland.

Thanks in advance.

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

The original Safire's were about a size smaller than some other manufacturer's canopy because they were measured differently. The Safire 2's are measured the same as PD etc now. Do a search and you can probably find out more.

I love my Safire 2.
I jumped Sabre 1 and find Safire 2 much better. However the Sabre 2 is much improved. Talking to people who tried both "2"'s, they say there is very little difference and it depends on personal taste.

So you either need to do the demo or look at the simple fact of which one is cheaper. I am sure you will be happy with either of them.

I did, and I couldn't find anything conclusive on the Safire 2. Thanks.

Ah, so now I understand what happened with the original Safire. Even though this doesn't give a definite answer as to exactly what we see in that number on the Safire 2, we can now at least compare the PD standard to the Icarus one.

Wow, Icarus really screwed up with the original fire series.

Why do you say that? Measuring a canopy differently than PD doesn't make for a screwup, at least not in my opinion. There's more than one way to measure a canopy.

The Crossfire is another story.

Renaming a 135 to a 122? Read billvons concern about that.

I love my Safire2, even more that I used to love my sabre1. foncerning sizes there was an article on paramag a few months ago which explained the different measuring systems, on flat surface and flying surface... maybe you can find an answer there...

I e-mailed Icarus and explained that this had been talked about here and if they could give me a reply that I could post so here is Icarus's reply

The Safire-1 and the Omega are measured differently to PD canopies. As a rough guide a Safire-1 or Omega is about the same size as the next size down - eg A Safire 149 is about a 135. A Safire 119 is about a 109. Use an equation of 8%.
The Safire-2 and Omni (Omni supercedes Omega) are measured the same as
PD.

All other Icarus Canopies are measured the same as PD.

The reason for the difference is due to Precision measuring their canopies differently. Icarus have always measured the same as PD however when we originally commenced in the USA, Precision were building parachutes for us under license and were doing it using their size equations and not Icarus/PD's.

We have therefore had to wait to supercede these models to change the size equation.

Only the Safire and Omega were affected.
