Bad movie magic

Recommended Posts

I just watched the movie "Terminal Velocity" with Charlie Sheen

The scene where he opens his reserve to escape from the roof of the factory.

He leaves the roof and just barely clears an electric fence.

He is flying a 7 cell reserve.

Then they show the guy shooting at him.

Then they show him land on the other side of the fence and he is flying a 9 cell .

Apparently the electric shock from the fence made the canopy mutate from a 7 cell to a 9 cell.

I watched again in super slow motion and confirmed it.

Thats what I call bad movie magic.

Duh >:(

I saw this one movie with Keanu Reeves where they were talking to each in freefall by simply raising their voices a little...across long distances>_< And then they're like "OMG 1000 FEET!" And a bunch of stuff happened. THEN they deployed

Yeah, that was Point Break. Full of boloney. I think they were in freefall for about 5 minutes while having jumped from 4000 ft.

I watched a Charlie Sheen movie recently - Hot Shots Part Duex. I'm sure it was a very true to life portrayal of how the military operates. After all, the movies are always 100% technically correct, right?

But a canopy changing from 7 cell to 9 cell in mid flight is a needless error.

In Hot Shots i think the way they fire a chicken with a bow and arrow is exactly how it would happen if done in real life!

True, however Hotshots was SUPPOSED to be absurd. ;)

This was just the result of bad editing and, I imagine, poor planning.
I suspect that they hoped it would go unnoticed.

I think the WORSE is in "Behind Enemy Lines", when Owen Wilson's character ejects is flying a RAM-air canopy, but when he lands on the trees, IS A ROUND CANOPY, actually, it looks like a baloon or something.

Yeah. So are jet contrails in the skies over the wild west of the 1850's.

If we were talking documentaries on skydiving I'd be agreeing with you. But it's the movies. Hollywood has it's own version of reality - one which does not take technical stuff into account.

Still, most filmmakers try to keep things relatively consistant with reality in this type of film. It's not science fiction after all B|

Of course all films that have skydiving in them portray skydivers in general as gun running, drug smuggling, bank robbing, murdering, psychopathic wierdo's.

I can think of one or two folks that match that description but in general I'd have to call that portrayal inaccurate as well B|

I want one of those canopies though. Being able to switch back and forth from 7 cell to 9 cell could radically enhance a canopies performance envelope!

There was one successful movie called "Ordinary People", but in general moviegoers want to see stuff that is unlike their own lives; drugsmuggling, murder, psycho stuff . A movie about me would be almost as boring as one about Quade, and we are both skydivers. Who would want to watch that?
...

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Yeah, that one was a hoot! I also liked "Mission to Mars" when the entry went wrong and out popped two ram air parachutes in a side-by-side. Somehow the parachutes managed to *land* ok, without the anticipated downplane.

or did you see the bit in the bond movie where the rocket powered ice sled pops out a ram air paracute to slow it down.... surely all that would happen is it would catch air, go above the sled and pick up the back end. I guess you would slow down... but only cos the damn parachute crashes you into the ground.

When I saw that part of the movie, I was in utter shock. I turned to whoever was next to me and said, "She can fly now?" It wasn't even a wing suit was it? It was like some kind of lingerie or something that she pulled tight to make into a 'wing'. And then the landing really sealed the deal. There's suspension of reality and then there's just plain over the line.

What about in Dropzone where Wesley Snipes does the Tandem jump and she drops him out of the plane with no rig, and then has a short conversation with the pilot and then jumps out after him, catches him, does a front loop onto his back, hooks up and deploys the canopy?

Even funnier was in the Tomb raider 2 movie where they run off the edge of the building with wing suits on. How the fuck do you run in a bird man suit?

Also, the two guys are flying perfectly next to each other and somehow one guys lands in the trees perfectly fine and another lands out in an open field with a messed up leg. Hmmmnn.....

You're all forgetting the fact... In this movie Keanu had "Never been skydiging," and he could already track properly and fly into formation ;) WisH I had his progression as a student for sure!

I just watched Congo (believe it or not I never watched the movie version since the book was full of technological mumbo-jumbo)The scene when they're bailing out of the plane over hostile territory is a hoot! They just start giving out rigs to everybody (not SL) without explaining what to pull and when! And that's not all! The guide jumps out while HOLDING onto a 300lb gorilla, no harness!

Check it out! :D

And cable TV wiring on telephone poles in movies about World War II, and cellphone towers in movies about the 60's. You can always find anachronisms and errors in movies. Succeeding at it is like succeeding in proving that politicians lie; it's interesting the first dozen times.

I often annoy my friends by being the one that points that stuff out. As I have often gotten popcorn thrown at me as a result I figured I'd post that as a sort of public service; it might help prevent the heartbreak of popcorn down your shirt. (Or worse, Gummi Bears in your hair.)
