does anyone here jump for free?

I get free jumps when I do demos.

I have done around thirty demos for high schools, middle schools, race car events, Vietnam Memorial Wall events, Armed Forces Day at Ft. Bliss, Balloon Festivals, Museums, etc.

Added to the free jump is the publicity and we always jump smoke and flags. They are a blast. It is a real thrill to jump into an unfamiliar place.

......[:/] When you do these "FREE demos,,,"
do you mean that the recipients of the demo get a freebie,:o,,,, or do you mean that the demo organizer
puts a demo together,,, "let's" you and your buds DO the jump,,, ( or maybe joins you ) ,,, but then Does NOT pay you for it????????????[:/][:/]
... It's one thing to "get the jump for free" and it's another to Give away a demo......and I disapprove of both!!>:(
Years ago we established a good team of people to do demos.... But they were SOLD,,, and each jumper got PAID !!!! not a ton of dough,, but 50 to 100 bucks...each,,, AND the organizer also made some $$$$.
Then some wise guys who had a plane, and were local jumpers as well,,,, figured they didn't mind doing such jumps for NOTHIN'..( except ego feeding) ..and basically killed the demo business in the area by giving it away.. ya' know????
I feel that any skydiver who
does an "Off Site Exhibition Skydive" into a tight landing area... ought to be paid,, and paid properly........ if you do the jump,,,, for the jump,, you're probably being taken advantage of by the organizer, or DZO who SOLD the jump... ( and you can be SURE that a seasoned demo salesman,,, WILL work both ends of that deal... he's probably gettin' 500 to 1000 bucks,,, and then payin you Zip>>>>>>> but oh yeah... you got "the jump for free" ,,, and all the adulation that goes with it.....
hahahah.. you're sellin' yourself short...(.IMHO )
especially if you're towing a flag or flying smoke...
When you get paid nothing for your work..... doesn't that mean it is worthless ??? !!!! .......yeah yeah don't tell me about all the new students it brings,,,,, THAT only benefits the DZO.. not the jumpers on the load....
By the way..........
Are you from a cessna dz???with a single dzo,,,, who EVERYBODY thinks,,,,, is the world's greatest skydiver????and who uses that Aura, to wave carrots under the noses of his "staff",,, carrots just like "free demo jumps".... just wonderin':|[:/]:) ,,,, ( you see,, I've seen THAT scenario,, more than ONCE,,, during my decades in the sport and it always bugged me.. ) peace... jmy

Wow, that is a whole lot of faces. I could only imagine what it would be like to watch you talk!!!

Anyway, just to clarify, the DEMO's I do are free for me, meaning the jump is free. I do not get paid, but I don't give a shit because I'm not in it to get paid. The EXPERIENCE and the FUN is good enough.

The DEMOs are paid for most of the time, but we do charity jumps as well, if it is for a good cause. I.E. Cancer Run/Walk events, Vietnam memorial wall events, and recently we did a DEMO for a returning soldier who fought in IRAQ.

To clarify another thing, the DZO is a single owner and it is a Cessna dropzone but does not think he is

He has no staff and he does everything from maintenance, rigging, packing student chutes, etc. all by himself.

So, I could go on for hours about your opinion, but I don't have time to explain things you will never understand. There is more to the sport of skydiving than getting paid, obviously you haven't found that out in your 2800 jumps which I'm sure you paid for.

>I feel that any skydiver who does an "Off Site Exhibition Skydive"
>into a tight landing area... ought to be paid,, and paid properly.

I've done demos into stadiums, onto beaches in Cabo San Lucas, into golf courses at night, onto islands, and into people's back yards. I've jumped with perhaps 50 other people on these demos, most of whom were members of our demo team (Skydiving Innovations.) I've jumped huge flags and streamers, and flown through the smoke of fireworks below us. I've jumped in green tights. There are times that I've gotten $500 a day to do (basically) easy demos and times that I've gotten nothing to do a difficult, tight demo at night.

And the one conlclusion I have come to is that skill, judgement and experience is everything; getting paid has nothing to do with the difficulty, performance, or indeed any other aspect of a demo jump.

>When you get paid nothing for your work..... doesn't that mean it is
>worthless ???

No. Do a demo if it is worth it to YOU, and for no other reason. Money is a very poor substitute for your own motivations, and often drives people to do dangerous things.

maybe... but you should get paid something..

..... I guess I Know what there is to the sport of skydiving..... and getting paid, is the least concern......in MY personal case....I was pointing out that YOU ought to be getting much MORE than just the free jump.. on any demo... don't sell yourself short.....
as for..."which you paid for".....fully half of those jumps were earned by packing student gear, jump mastering Cessna Load after Cessna load of static lines,,, ( perhaps while others here were youngsters )
instructing static line classes,,, packing some more,,,
doing odd jobs for various DZO's, and then shooting and sharing video with my friends and with students...the last 9 years....because I have always done my best to contribute in some way,,, where ever I was jumping...If fair compensation is in the form of lift tickets,, i'm happy with that....
All I meant to say friend,, is a free jump from the dzo should be enjoyed at the end of the day on the DZ,, but when you go offsite for a serious, potentially risky, jump..( especially one which generates revenue for your DZO ) you should get the jump AND some $$$$$$....:)

What happened to the faces? I couldn't even tell you were from New York without them. I had to read your last post with a New York accent to get the same feel.

Anyway, our DZO has been doing his thing since the early 70's. He knows how to run his business and he knows that DEMOs are a big thing for him. Because he knows how important they are, he wants them done right. And because he wants them done right, he goes to the right people. Those people are always me, my Dad, and 1 or 2 other quality jumpers. Since he always asks me over a lot of other jumpers with more jumps this gives me a lot of responsibility which I enjoy.

I also enjoy:

Every jump is potentially risky and DEMOs can be as well because they are usually done into landing sites never before seen. That is another reason why I like them. The challenge is awesome, especially when you are the first one in and have to set the pattern. I enjoy that shit a lot.

I also enjoy being 1 of 4 jumpers always on the DEMO because the DZO knows I can handle it.

The THRILL and the free jump ($15.00 + $15.00 for smoke) is my payment. They are just a blast to do.

Yeah, work, that's it!!!

Real hard work!!!

Launch a 4 way out of a plane with smoke, turn some points, trail a flag, swoop Ft. Bliss Army base, listen to the crowd cheer, get your name and picture in the paper, get on the 6 o' clock news, meet some important people, and usually get a free T-Shirt.

Holy Shit!!! What a hard bunch of crap to do!!!

Well, it beats the hell out of packing and doing coaching jumps for free. That shit is work, this is a free jump over the city and landing in some never before landed places.

But, you're right it's work. . . . . FUN ASS WORK!!!

Now, you can FOGETABOUTIT Jimmy Tavino/hard working man!!!

hey Kid!!!!!!!!

You DON'T get it ......do you????????

It ain't about the glory for you!!!!!!.. it's about being compensated for safely representing our sport to the general public..... You are a Demo Organizers Delight....... a man who should be making Money for his "skill",, and instead is perfectly happy with ,,,"wowing the wuffos..".....for a freakin T shirt.
Fuggehdaboutit ??????? shit..... maybe when you have "thousands and thousands" of jumps instead of "hundreds and hundreds" of jumps.... ( you sound like another one of those types.. who can't be bothered to log their jumps) you WILL get it....
as for your non paying coach jumps.... what's with that???? are you RATED as a coach,??? Is the DZO charging the student for a coach,, and then not paying you??????... I dunno man do what you want... just don't get on me....cause i point out that you're working cheap...... Hey send an e mail to Pat Morehead... ask HIM what he thinks about demo jumpers doing it for nuthin.... either you're a pro... or you're a scab.... get it Now???!!!!!
shit...demos for nuthin..... Sure it's fun sure it's NOT WORK......but just wait til you miss a target,, and take out a vehicle.. or a person,,, or GOD forbid,,, a little Kid !!!!!.... then you'll wish you had a few bucks in your "demo account" to cover your lawyer........ but don't go slamming me in the forum. I truly am NOT in this to make money,,, never have been,,, Junior.... but I get a pain in my head when I see guys doing demos..... for nuthin' ...
j t

Dude,
I was talking about the coach jumps you do. And as far as the thousands of jumps thing, I sure hope I know more than you when I get there. I also hope I'm not like you and become afraid to jump onto a football field or something for free.

I wouldn't be on the DEMO if the DZO was afraid that I was going to hit a car or child.

You aren't going to get me to see your point!! Your point is lame!!! Get it??????????

Thanks for killing the thread with your grumpy way!!!

Go Yankee's!!!!!

Then hit a disc in a four way intersection on a DEMO.

Oh wait, we know you won't, because there is no money involved. Money isn't everything Jimbo.

Anyway, sorry about posting the PM I thought you liked it when people heard what you had to say.

It would be awesome if we could end the bickering!!!

Go Jets!!!
