kelel01 1 #1 October 5, 2003 I graduated the AFF program today!! I also did my first solo jump!! (I know, beer, beer, beer). Both jumps were awesome, and I was not nervous on my solo at all. (Weird.) But I have a question-- on my solo jump, my chest strap jumped up and got me in the chin really hard. I have a big scrape on my face, and my teeth cut my lip open. My question is, would this more likely be a sign of a hard opening or a poorly fitting harness? If it could be the harness, I just want to avoid that rig from now on (until I get my own gear). But I have jumped that rig before. When I deployed the pilot chute, though, right away something felt weird. I could really feel the pilot chute catch the wind or something. Any thoughts? ypelchat 0 #2 October 5, 2003 Congrats on finishing AFF! My previous equipment had been made for a guy much taller than I am. And even with the leg straps tightened very tight, I was having this problem from time to time.. So my advice to you is: Make sure your leg straps are correctly tightened. If this doesn't help, try to use another container. If they're all the same, then you're out of luck. You may want to talk to your instructor about this too. He may help you to fix this problem. Blue Skies!!! Kelly Congrats on finishing AFF. As for the chest strap, it is likely a combination of the two things. The biggest cause would be a poor fitting harness. When you buy your own rig, be sure to jump it first if you buy used to make sure that this does not occur...if you have one built for you, no worries - it'll be built to your body. My chest strap cannot even come close to my chin unless I have my legstraps completely loosened. Mike
smiles 0 #4 October 6, 2003 QuoteHells, yeah! Now the fun can begin!! I bet you had huge fun on your 1st. solo and while taking your AFF program Congratulations are in order! wacked by chest strap? I've been there: - Wearing altimeter on chest strap also....so alti smack in the pan! - Felt like a broken nose once when flying rounds (reserve on belly)...my reserve flipped up and hit my pan on opening. - Talk to your instructor about any concerns -and never stop asking questionsSMiles
voodew1 0 #5 October 6, 2003 More than likely it was both hard opening(maybe body positon) and loose fitting gear. I am to assume it was rented student gear which if the main lift web is not adjusted for you body the chest strap would ride either high or low (high in this case) and allow it to come up to your face if the leg straps were not tight enough or loosened on opening. At this point find your instructer and have them expain how to adjust everything properly and always get a jumpmaster/AFF instructer to give you a good gear check before every jump Once off student status find some one you trust to give you a gear check before every jump..the life you save may be your own The pimp hand is powdered up ... say something stupid
