Jumping in Fall Weather

Recommended Posts

Figure it's 3.3 degrees colder per 1,000 feet so that'll give you a rough estimate on temperature at altitude. And, if it's going to be 60-65 degrees out...that's not fridgid. :D Light gloves, long sleeve shirt, jeans would work perfectly.

I jump in NY State, and we have an Otter flying all winter.
We may only have a handful of people and be able to only get up 4 or 5 loads, but the atmosphere becomes much more intimate during these winter periods.
The bonfire can be as much fun as the skydiving.

Stay safe,
Mike

dammit, that's warm... I'm gonna have 1or2 C saturday...

Heh, a few belo zero here, know what ya mean. Minus 22C at 4300 meters (or beloved pilot has a tendency to take us a wee bit higher on the last lift of the day, if possible). It ain't bad if one gets a good seat on the Cessna on the way up :)

Was nice and cold this weekend, didn't have gloves on for one jump, was brisk but tolerable (about 40-50ish on the ground)

Winter is no excuse to stop jumping, just means its cold. I guess growing up in wisconsin, cold is a relative term compared to someone who grew up in a warm state.

Heh I found out what full face helmets are for this Sunday. Sunset lift, 4000 meters. Beautiful, clear weather.

Couldn't feel my (substantial) nose when I came down.

Was good though. Managed to lure an RWer to do a jump with me. Big heavy guy, falls like a rock. Came close to docking (him on tummie, me in sit), but his visor was so iced up he couldn't really see me that well :P.

Am gonna get me one of those cool I-am-gonna-rob-a-bank/I-am-a-special-forces-soldier balaclava thingies.

Yes you are a wimp ! ;)

Coldest jump I ever did was when I lived in Scandinavia. It was - 10C on the ground and - 40 C at altitude. I never forget that jump.. brrrrrrrrrrr.:S

Now I live in Australia and do not worry about things like this B| Even in Winter it does not get much colder then -10 C or so at altitude. Jump all year :)
Going into summer soon and it will be a relief to get to altitude when it gets hot in January/February. Where I live its often 40-45 C (thats around 110 F).

There are couple of DZ open all year around here in Finland... Of course the days are (depending where you live) only 0-4 h long, so it's not possible to have that many loads per day anyway. :P

It doesn't mean you have to stop jumping though...;)

They don't. Americans are scared of clouds.

In England we can't jump if there aren't any clouds... its an automatic national holiday on a blue sky day.

Yes, and we are also scared of sock puppets. However, we aren't scared of Germans.:P
