SkymonkeyONE 4 #2 October 29, 2003 Yes, I wear my helmet during both take-off and landings (when applicable). Not doing so would not only be counter to what the FAA says we should do, it would also be a shitty example to the student I generally have sitting next to me. indyz 1 #3 October 29, 2003 On my head or clipped to my chest strap, always. Edit to add: Usually on my chest strap. I'm not convinced that having it there is a great idea, though. I could see that buckle breaking in a violent crash.

dgskydive 0 #6 October 29, 2003 I was asking because a few weekends ago I was shocked to see afew experienced jumpers not either wearing them or strapping them down. They said they never did at there DZ and it was no big deal!Dom
nightjumps 1 #7 October 29, 2003 On my head, from the minute I board. I'm always ready to exit the plane at any time. I know there are those who'll object, but strapping it to your chest has zero value. I don't think that one has time to put the helmet on if the plane shits the bed fifty feet off the deck. skybytch 273 #8 October 29, 2003 I wear it on take off until I take my seatbelt off, usually at 1000 feet. Haven't landed with the plane in so long I don't remember if I put it on or not the last time.
flyangel2 2 #9 October 29, 2003 Remind them about the Perris crash and ask them to put their helmets on. quade 4 #10 October 29, 2003 I buckle my camera helmet in my seat belt. I usually wear my freefly helmet when I have an occasion to do that, if not then I've probably buckled it into my seat belt out of force of habit.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

andy2 0 #12 October 29, 2003 I, and most everybody else on my DZ who has a helmet wears it for take off. The only people I can think of that dont wear their helmet on takeoff are camera men (who probably would rather damage their skull than their 3,000$ setup ). --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm... Fast 0 #13 October 29, 2003 Wear my helmet till 1000. I see people who don't always wear them though. It makes me nervous to think that an unstowed/worn helmet might come slamming into me in a crash, camera and all, because it was not on the persons head.~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. DJL 235 #14 October 29, 2003 I do because I think it's easier to just put it on before I get on the plane (ff helmet) instead of having another thing in my hands to fumble with while seating. I don't have a problem with what others do as long as they strap it in. At my DZ, camera fat is good about getting their shots in before takeoff and strapping them in. We'd rather not have helmets, especially w/ camera, tossed around the cockpit in a crash, or even if we had to abort and shit got bumpy."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

The problem is that their expensive camera equipment is going to damage my skull too. Make them put it on or strap it in. Yes I said "make" again. If they don't listen, talk to the DZO and then refuse to get on the plane with them till they put that helmet on. (that's what I did once, and the engines were running) It was quite the site to see! AggieDave 6 #18 October 29, 2003 Sport jump or a Coach jump, yup, I almost always wear it (if not, its secured to my chest strap). For landing, it's fucking on! I hate landing in planes. Tandem jumps, well, crammed in the back of a 182 with a tandem rig on isn't exactly comfy, so usually I have it clipped to my chest strap.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." ccowden 0 #19 October 29, 2003 So I am rolling down a runway strapped to the floor of an airplane and I have a helmet. Why in the world would you not wear it??? I just don't think it makes sense that people wear helmets for protection during a skydive but wouldn't wear it during take off. You have a helmet, wear it! Ain't gonna do ya any good strapped to your chest strap. I understand it is to keep it from flying around during a crash or something, but if you have considered being safe to that degree, wouldn't it do a lot more good on your head strapped down?!!! AggieDave 6 #20 October 29, 2003 Quoteif you have considered being safe to that degree, wouldn't it do a lot more good on your head strapped down?!!! From someone who was in a plane crash, I think my helmet could of helped, but it really didn't matter (it was on, though). In that same regard, my seatbelt was what really really mattered. I still wear my helmet when I can (it just really really really really sucks when in the back of the 182 with a tandem rig on).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
