blueskyserenity 0 #1 November 4, 2003 I'm new to the sport and their is so much terminology and lingo I'm not familiar with and you can't go to your average webster's for some of these definations. What is swooping?I like coconuts. You can break them open and they smell like ladies lying in the sun!

PhreeZone 20 #3 November 4, 2003 Swooping - Doing a landing that involves building up a lot of speed and planeing out just above the ground. Can result in glides a few inches above the ground for hundreds of feet... or can result in death if mistimed by a few feet. Most professional swoopers have spent their time in the ER getting their legs and lives put back together after a botched swoop attempt.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
quade 4 #4 November 4, 2003 Swooping refers to a couple of different aspects of the sport. You'll see swooping referred to with regards to formation skydiving where a person, exiting the plane later than the first people exiting, dives down to the first group. This person "swoops" into position and has "swoop cords" on his jumpsuit that when pulled tight pulls the armpits of his jumpsuits outward sort of like a small camera flyer's wing helping the person to stop relative to the rest of the group. In recent years a second use of the word has come to mean a very long hoizontal flight under canopy just a few inches above the ground or water and just before actually landing. Beautiful to see when done correctly, but also -deadly- if performed incorrectly. And there's one last meaning . . . swoop can also be used as a euphemism for taking something away from somebody else, as in "Did you see that dude just swoop that chick I was after?" quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
freeflybella 0 #5 November 4, 2003 QuoteMost professional swoopers have spent their time in the ER getting their legs and lives put back together after a botched swoop attempt. More accurately, "a good number of swoopers" have spent their time in the ER getting their legs and lives put back together after a botched swoop attempt. And, more and more, less-experienced jumpers who do not have respect for the time and effort involved in learning how to swoop safely and responsibly, have died. It's an awesome discipline but only for experienced skydivers. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
