Scariest jump

Recommended Posts

The scariest jump I ever had was 5 years ago on a 10 way jump out of a Cessna Caravan. We hung 5 out and I was rear float. On exit, something on my harness snagged on the guy in front of me, and a slight push separated us. I didn't notice anything wrong then. We performed a good dive turning the points. Then at 4500 feet breakoff, and just as I turned and started tracking away, I felt something flapping against my left leg, a quick look down told me I had a fully extended leg strap, all the way out to the end! With a 120 main and a 120 reserve loaded at 1.5, there was no way I would have been able to get clean openings out of either canopy. I went after the wildly swinging leg strap, trying to get ahold of the end of it. I was able to grab it, but took quite a while trying to pull it tight, as I didn't have good leverage. But finally I got it cinched tight and immediately reached back for my pc and pitched at the same time I checked my altimeter OOOH FUCK!! I pitched at 1200 feet, got a fully open canopy by 600 feet. I didn't have a Cypres at the time (1.5 months later I got one).

That one was probably my scariest jump from the standpoint of desperation, knowing I was in trouble and had very little time to deal with it.

I do check my gear several times before each jump, the last time just before jump run. Everything was in place on that jump. Just shows that anything can happen even if you do everything right.
