Toy Balloons

Recommended Posts

Yeah, at about 4200 feet about 3 years ago I saw a big red flash a couple hundred feet away in freefall and thought it was a freeflier at first then under canopy I looked up and saw that it was a cluster of ballons all tied together.

Yup, I've gone by a couple and have seen more then a few from the plane while climbing to altitude. We've seen them as high as around 7k around here.

Whats much worst are the large balloons that car dealerships have. They sometimes get away from their anchors and float away. Those, I'm more then sure, would reach much higher altitudes and cause serious injury to anyone that hit one in freefall.[:/]

Earlier this year I was following 2 crw guys around. I noticed this thing to my left, getting closer real soon. What the ^&* is that? Well it turned out to be a largish orange balloon. Kinda like a weather balloon. It was Queen's Day here in Holland, so that was probably the reason it was orange.
The other 2 never saw it, but it scared me a little. Didn't expect something like that and it passed me very very fast and fairly close (I estimate about 200 m). And it was BIG. Too bad I didn't have my camera...

Yep I'll try and find the video.. at ballunar in houston, I would guess i was around 3 - 4K feet, saw it coming up and went to try and catch it.. flew right past me pretty quick :) would have been neat.

Maybe a new sport? hehe..

On a different note, friday on mythbusters they re-created the lawn chair suspended by weather balloons "myth" .. pansys only took it up like 30 feet, used probably 4 or 5 thousand dollars in helium. what a waste.

I would have gone out there and let them let it loose :)
