Observer rides

Recommended Posts

Same as a jump ticket.

I went on one before I jumped there because I was alone, and scared I would not be able to see the DZ from the air. HAH!

I had to wear gear and everything, and I almost changed my mind and jumped...but thought better of it. The pilot was really good, too, and showed me lots of things from the air I didn't notice on the ground - some outs wayyyyyy away in case of emergency, and other things like that.

Do it...it's fun.

I'm gonna try to stop by Elsinore tomorrow, depending on if I feel up to it. I'm still really tired cause of this flu thing, and not really feeling great (though the doc swears I can't pass it along to anyone else anymore!) so I don't know if skydiving would be the smartest idea, so I thought an observer ride might be fun.

Twould be fun to finally meet you in person, girl!

I will be there, no doubt. Jumping? I hope so, depending on weather. There is no forcasted rain just yet, but who knows about the ceilings...

Anyway, I would love to buy you a cuppa coffee and give you a big ol hug, girl, so make it out!!!

Same as a jump ticket.

Really, is that for waivered jumpers only or for "whuffo you jump" civilian whuffos ? In the old days observer rides were common. Observers would wear a bailout rig (FAA regs for an open door aircraft, etc) and pay for altitude the same as the jumpers. I've got a 1980 picture of my wife in her first jump gear, standing in front of the price board at Perris. It says "Whuffo Rides - $10", which was the going price for 12,500 in those days (and we thought it was robbery...). But my daughter asked about an observer ride last week and was told that insurance won't cover non-jumper passengers in the plane, so observer rides were discontinued.

I think observer rides were just great. Even if they never jump, the whuffs get a huge thrill out of seeing people go out the door and fall away.

Hi, Tom

I really don't know. I was a waivered jumper - and never thought to ask if whuffos could do it. If so, I think maybe my father could get a good laugh out of it....but I can't recall any whuffos doing it.

??? That's a good question!

I've seen whuffos go up after completing the normal DZ waiver. Maybe that would cut it where you are.

I have seen that done at several DZ I have jumped at..Fill out the DZ waiver...Price of a jump ticket... Pilot bailout rig... VOILA

Watch all the cool people going out the door

DZO said same cost as a regular jump ticket - she just has to wear a student rig and learn emergency procedures.

And if she has to jump and use the parachute........
You'll also have to pay the cost of the first jump course if you survive!!!!:P:ph34r:

I've only ever seen observer rides done by whuffos, never by jumpers (even student jumpers).

At our DZ we do let the observers go up, after they fill out the form, and learn emergency procedures, but we don't really advertise the observer rides. I think its because its still kinda a grey legal area.

Ed and I seem to remember hearing $25 for a ride, but it may be $20. I can't remember... (Ed's an instructor at Elsinore)
But I have done a couple in Elsinore since i broke myself. It's nice to just check out the scenery, since i just moved here. Justin and Karl will probably be flying tomorrow. If you are sick and have any sinus trouble, be careful, even the ride can be rough on sinusses, they dive the plane fast after everyone is out, so the pressure changes fast.

If you still have 14 jumps (from your profile), you should bring your logbook and A card in case you want to jump, the instructors will need to see that.

they dive the plane fast after everyone is out,

This is the best part of doing an observation dive. If you have a fun group of pilots, I highly recomend doing one sometime during your skidiving career. It's a hell of a rideB|

Sitting in the right seat of a Twin Otter with the entire winshield nothing but green coming at you is way coolB|, well worth the price of a jump ticket!!

I did one when I was a student just for the ride. The next one I did when I was injured and couldn't jump for a while>:(. Just to get somewhat back in the air after to long a hiatus.

My Dad has made several observer rides. He get's a kick out of watching me jump out the door and loves the dive the pilot does after the jumpers leave. A lot of the time, he's back on the ground before I am:)

Here In South Florida The only place where Whuffos can get a ride in the airplane is at the DZ in Pahokee (I really don't know now that is under the new owners) but at miami or clewiston you can't.
I asked in miami how could a observer be let in the airplane, and their answer was "only if they pay a regular tandem ticket" I wonder how many poor stupid fools have paid $199 to go on the copilot seat hehehe...

I'm from the same dz as bch7773, so this is probably a repeat of info.
Yeah, we do observer rides - No problem. We charge the standard lift ticket of $15 - have an instructor or coach teach them the EP's and they do fill our a waiver. I've paid for a couple of observer rides for my sister & a College Newspaper reporter, and I plan on taking my girlfriend up for a ride soon. It really is no big deal, but we try to not bump jumpers for a rider.

anyone know how much it is to do an observer ride at Elsinore?

My mom did an observer ride at Elsinore to watch me jump. She had to pay $25, sign the waiver, and wear a rig. I have the coolest mom in the world... she says she wants to do a tandem, and this is even after watching me jump!

We do them at our DZ in the turbines. They passanger doesn't wear a rig, but neither does the pilot so B|

They just have to fill out the waiver form so if they die, we don't get sued :):ph34r:B|:P
