What does your chest strap look like after opening?

Recommended Posts

Mine looks just like it did when I left the plane. After opening though I loosen it to the stop. Currently jumping a Jav, hopefully I'll be jumping an Infinity in a few weeks.

After I open the chest strap on my Mirage G3 is right where I left it before the jump.

Once I have a good canopy over my head I loosen it all the way to the stop after I have collapsed & stowed my slider.

OK, I just got your question...mine is where I left it before getting out of the airplane, but I loosen up to the stop after opening.

OK, can someone clarify why do that? What if you get self-induced line-twists or something and have to cutaway - don't you get a risk of falling out during the reserve deployment?

It's one of those things (like collapsing the slider and stowing it behind your head to reduce drag) done to increase the performance of one's canopy. By loosening the chest strap, you allow the risers to spread further apart and the canopy to flatten out a bit.

For those of us with zippier canopies and/or higher wing-loading it makes a more noticable difference.

Under a larger, less-loaded canopy you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

As an instructor, I would advise that you not mess with your chest strap right now.;)

In the event of line-twists, canopy collision, etc....the chest strap is still there and will still hold one in after a cutaway. It's not completely undone, just loosened to the stop or until there's slack in it (for those with really long chest straps).

Kris knows what he´s talking about.

If your straps loosen during the jump there´s something terribly wrong with the rig. Old and dirty straps do it, so a light wash with mild soap ususally helps.;)

what he said only I'm happy with my Javelin. If yours loosens up, you need to do something about that. It isn't supposed to and it isn't safe.

I have never had a jump where the chest strap was where I put it when I got in the plane. It always loosens a bit (not much, just a bit), and goes from under the hills to over them...which is why, thinks me, it loosens.

I don't think I have any issues with the fastener on my current harness because once I land, I have to work it to get it to come loose, but I will check everything and make sure it's clean and free of debris, especially since I invented the BLF yesterday (the Boobie Landing Fall).

Thanks for the heads-up!

that's a different story. Breasts are very malleable. Yes, the strap will move up and or down over them regardless of where it may have started and loosening a fraction of an inch isn't a big deal. I have seen a chest strap with a 'catch' ( a very old one) that no longer works properly. We tested it on the ground and found that the strap would pull through fairly easily. One hard unexpected opening and it could have been very ugly.

Any chance someone got video of that?

Agreed. I have never had the strap come that far undone...only loosen slightly. Anything more than "typical" loosening would be a significant concern.

Nope. Thank God. It was really ugly and somewhat painful. First jump back after a 64 day layoff, and I utterly misjudged absolutely everything on that landing....but! I got up and walked away, and I'm not lopsided, so all is well.

Mine stays snug where I put it throughout the skydive, I jump a Mirage G4. I try to loosen it once I get under canopy to open up my canopy a bit, but it is kind of hard to do since I start with it snug, and plus it kind of freaks me out to loosen up my chest strap. I know it isn't a bit deal, but just kind of wierd to get use to.B|

No change in chest strap location/tightness on my vector 3, unless I mess with it.

I've had a legstrap on my old rig loosen to the stop during a track a couple times. Very disconcerting. A band stow solved the problem.

My chest strap stays put on both my new and old rig. The old rig was a Dolphin, the new one a Vector 3.

Like the others, I like to loosen it to the stop after opening.
