Should moderators be allowed to do anything they want on the jump plane

Recommended Posts

If I vote "yes, moderators can do whatever they want" can I get to see the dungeon >:(?

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

You know, honestly when I first read this thread, I thought it was a joke, to give a little ribbing to one of the Greenies.

He's a greenie, but he's also an experience instructor and a former S&TA, he knows his shit. Even at my home DZ, if one of the instructors cuts me off to check the spot, he/she might have seen something out the windows that I didn't see. Or the pilot might have said something to him/her, so I let it go. I can always ask for a go around.B|

This summer at Rantoul I organized an 8-way RW group at the end of a weather hold. There were still more clouds than holes, and we agreed to have an EXTREMELY experienced jumper near the door clear the spot.

When the green light came on, we got continued shaking of the head from our spotter. No good.

People behind us were yelling "GO!"

I started out responding "NO!" and rapidly switched to "FUCK YOU!"

When our group's part of the jump run had elapsed, we let the people behind us go, so they were not delayed by our decision not to jump and exited just where they would have if we'd gone on the green.

Everyone on my group agreed to eat a jump ticket to avoid punching a cloud with a group, but we got a go-around (thanks, Paul!) and had a great jump.

Even though I couldn't see out the door, I wouldn't second guess someone with years of experience who was making the call.

I did apologize for yelling "FUCK YOU!" at those pressing us to go, since I didn't consider how unhappy it was likely to make tandem students at the time.

Nevertheless, I greatly appreciated having someone in the door looking out for me.

I jump with Bill. I trust his instincts, and defer to his expertise in areas where he has experience and I don't. I would be more comfortable jumping after he had given the all clear than simply on the basis of GPS.

I bet if you had simply said "excuse me," he would have made way if it was safe, or indicated his concern if it wasn't.

I think you are reading much more into this than circumstances warrant.

Blue skies,

Winsor

Windsor, why not do what I do when at WFFC. I let the groups behind me know if I'm going to be checking the spot, and remind them not to start yelling at me the minute the green light goes on. It seems to help stop the yelling if I let the whole load know what I'm going to do,not just the group I'm in charge of.

Communication is the important thing that I think we are all missing on this thread. Steve is a very experienced jumper, as well as Bill is too. I think if the two just communicated before the incident, there would have been no reason for this thread to even start up.

Now you two kiss and make up;)

Unfortunately, that yes-combination wasn't an option. It would've had to've been "No, moderators can do whatever they want." or "Yes, they had no business blocking the door."

In each case the remainder of the sentence contradicts the original affirmation or negation to the question.

and you could always check the spot and ask for a go-around,

Actually you can ask, but you won't get a go-around. It was announced numerous times over the PA system in Eloy that they "would not do go-arounds." In fact the guy said "if you check the spot and it's long, you better hurry and get out cause it's only gonna get worse."

Yes Brian Burke was the one who said that. ;) Brian is an awesome guy. I only wish I could pick his brain everyday. But at least I was lucky enough to have an awesome 20-30 minute one-on-one conversation with him one afternoon after my reserve ride. B|

I have exchanged a PM with Bill and as far as I'm concerned, I am done with this thread with hopefully no negative attitudes between each other.

Way-Cool! The only way... the best way.

But you should still post the video.... If I know Bill (and I don't, really), he wouldn't mind it being posted anyway. And if people can keep from being to sarcastic, then we will have an intelligent convo.

Even if just to satisfy all our curiosities :)

Not sure what qualifies for a moderator on these forums, but i'm sure it's bound to be just a little bit of knowledge on the subject (sarcasm) but having myself had to jumpmaster a load numurous times if i felt something was wrong and stepped in front of jumpers to check, tough they will just have to accept it, as i'm sure if it is Billvon or any other qualified person will feel exactly the same. I'm sure the AFF-I/skydiver would have felt duely thankfull that someone had taken their saftey into consideration.

Do you greenies have superpowers - like on the justice league??

Yes, But it is more like the Hulk, I thought that was common knowledge. If you cross them they become extremely mad and they grow tremendous muscles, tearing apart their Green Wingsuits...
On occasion they then f**k up a spot so bad that normal, hard working law abiding blue skydivers end up in another state or even another continent.
Cant be helped, just try not to enrage em.
Thats why I voted that they could do anything they wanted. You never know if they can't see how you voted (they can see that you voted, now can't they?). Keep em on your side at all costs. Better safe than sorry!

You know...ever since Billvon's nude load landed way off (3-5 miles?) at Quincy several years ago, I'll bet the man has learned something about spotting at boogies since then.;)>:(

With that kind of history, I'd trust him.B|

Huh?

I mean excuse me?

Get over what? my post commends him for having delt personaly with the person he was upset with and asks to see the vid. I'm confused as to what exactly I am to 'get over'.

I didn't have to walk anywhere... I've never jumped in the dessert (that would be kinda sticky and sweet)... I've never jumped in the desert either :P
