Have you ever bought a new main?

I feel less safe. A parachute with more than 1 jump on it has been tested under load; a new parachute could be missing all its bartacks, or some crossports, or could have a serious line trim problem. (I've seen all these on 'new' parachutes, including one reserve.)

When is the last time you saw these errors? I'm not suggesting that errors don't happen, just curious as to how often.

Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

8, 5 and 5 years ago respectively. They're pretty rare (fortunately.) I think the line trim problem was caused by using the wrong reline kit on a used parachute, so it's not a new-parachute problem as much as a rigger error (although it could certainly happen on a new parachute as well.)

In the olden days (1978) I bought a brand new custom built Handbury harness/container system for a king's ransom of $245. Also bought a Cobra 10 ( a five cell Strato Star clone, made of the 1.25 oz lightweight fabric used before F-111). That piece of shit started tearing apart at the ribs within about sixty jumps. The dealer felt so bad he practically gave me a Viking Superlite (a Strato Cloud clone that was actually a damn decent canopy, by Pioneer). Kept that rig 'til I quit jumping, the reserves were all used.

Last week I bought my first rig in 22 years. It's all used, but only 2-3 years old. The Spectre is still slippery enough to annoy me and the PD reserve has had a few rides, so I know it works. The Cypres is only 3 years old (yay!!!), and the Javelin is just beautiful. It even fits me, it was made for a big guy more or less my size. I easily saved about $2000, if not more and have a lovely rig that will last me for as long as I ever want it.

I bought my first main new. (I must have been insane at the time.) A Spectre 170. What a bitch to pack... yet I still have this fondness for her....

I hate to say it, but I've yet to purchase a used canopy. My first one should have been used, but SQ1 had a good deal on a Triathlon 220 which nobody wanted. But then after that I wanted to fly a Sabre2 190 and finding a used one might have been a lengthy ordeal. And then the same scenario repeated itself when I wanted to start flying a Sabre2 170. Well you'd think I'd be done with new gear after that. But last summer I decided that I was ready to fly a Crossfire2. I had a chance to pick up Freeflyz Crossfire2 129, but I thought a 40 square foot downsize would be too aggresive. So I picked up yet another new (no regrets mind you) Crossfire2 139. But I will be keeping my eyes open in the future for a used Crossfire2 129 and if I pickup a 2nd rig (likely for Birdman jumps) I hope to find a used Sabre2 150 or a Saffire2 149.

The crutch of all of this is that I wanted to fly a particular type of canopy and finding used ones of these types can be challenging.
