Another canopy question

I'm just wondering, what's the difference between a regular canopy, a crew canopy, and those jalbert parafoil things? I'm not looking for detailed tech specs and whatnot, just a general sort of something-an-AFF-person can understand. The paragear catalog makes for wonderful "throne" reading, and I keep seeing those other canopies and was just wondering what the difference was. Thanks!

"Regular canopy" and a "CRW canopy" That I can tell you.

Here's the basic stuff. You know what a "regular" canopy is, you've been jumping one, so we'll talk about a CRW specific canopy.

A CRW specific canopy usually/generally has a few things different. One, the angle of attack is steeper, so it will stay pressurized while in formations. The lines are not micro-line (which can cut very deeply very easily during some docks and during wraps), the bridle/PC is retractable, the lines are not cascaded (hard to explain unless you know how to pack and are familar with how a canopy is setup) and sometimes the two center A lines are colored red for easy identification.

There are a few other things that would go along with that, but that's the basic.

The Jalbert Parafoils are usually used for accuracy, because they behave so well in deep brakes.

They are usually big (252/300 sq.ft.), but I had the smaller 189 'babyfoil' with the old spider slider - attached with bridal through the canopy to the pilot chute.

They're all ram-airs. CRW canopies generally have continuous A-lines, a pilot chute retract system, provisions for CRW openings (tailpocket, no D-bag, thin bridle) and are trimmed differently depending on what you will do with them (rotation, big ways etc.) The parafoil was an early ram-air, and is still popular for accuracy due to its stability in brakes and ability to make steep approaches.

i can talk about PARAFOIL
i saw 3 kind of parafoil flying 252,272,282
it`s a big canopy very very good for accuracy jumping
very good control of canopy in different winds...
it`s a slow canopy - somewhere at 8-10 m/s
however u pack it it`s not the best 2 jump one from high alti (more than 6000 ft)
a lot of girls had muscle problems with this canopy flying half-brakes
