MuffDiver 0 #2 January 24, 2004 I usually pack my own, but when I do hire a packer it is out of sheer laziness on my part. __________________________________________________ Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out alive.
hookitt 1 #3 January 24, 2004 When I do use a packer it's because I feel lazy or don't have time. I didn't have time to pack when when I trained, but beyond that, I've almost always packed for myself. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... FrogNog 1 #4 January 24, 2004 If there's one more load and I really want to be on it, or if the 3 other people there need me to be on it , I will sometimes have someone pack for me. If that person is one of the riggers that taught me to pack, chances are good it'll open right. And I pack so slow. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
quade 4 #5 January 24, 2004 Need ONE more category: There's no way to do what I do without one. For instance . . . let's say you're involved with a team that does back-to-back jumps all day long. There's just no way to train like that without having somebody else pack your rig.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Nightingale 0 #6 January 24, 2004 because I was paying to rent gear, and it takes me two hours to pack. If I pay a packer, I can do five jumps If I pack for myself, I can do two. Now that I have my own stuff (or at least, it will be totally mine when I give GroundZero the check next week), I pack for myself more often because I don't have to worry about the rental fees. osuskydiver 0 #7 January 24, 2004 why pay 5 bucks when I can trash pack my canopy in 4 mins. It looks nasty but it opens nicely. By the time you read this you have already read it.
boxingrrl 0 #8 January 24, 2004 QuoteNeed ONE more category: There's no way to do what I do without one. Yep-- flying camera and doing back to back tandem videos I often have to pay a packer (and/or borrow my honey's rig) to keep up. And then there's just the end of the day laziness... Amazon 7 #9 January 24, 2004 Sometimes I pack my own other times I hire a packer.. depends on how I feel that day.. If I just want to jump and have fun I get one of the packers to do it.. most of our packers are young kids working their way thru college etc. That way I can talk with friends.. log my jump or have a nice cold coke on a warm day. Is that lazy???Nah I was in an accident 11 years ago and I dont bend and roll around on the ground as well as I did when I was 20..... and I can afford it... and I remember what it was to be young and not be able to make as many jumps as I wanted because I could not afford it. indyz 1 #11 January 24, 2004 Usually it goes something like this: I've already done 5 or 6 jumps, packing for myself, my back is sore, my fingers are dry and bleeding (I hate that), the sunset load is dirt diving in 5 minutes, and we're on a 15 minute call. True but not true, I can film a team and get out at 10'500 ft and land and pack before the next load, but doing that all day everyday gets old, so I usually hire a packer after a while. But that is a good reason to hire a packer, actually most of the time I see teams get packers and the video person packs themselves. Ray Small and fast what every girl dreams of! airdweller 0 #13 January 24, 2004 >why pay 5 bucks when I can trash pack my canopy in 4 mins. It looks nasty but it opens nicely< Ditto. Also every four packs is another jump you either lose if you have someone else pack, or gain if you pack yourself. WrongWay 0 #14 January 24, 2004 1. I'm lazy. 2. In most cases, they're faster than I am. 3. Allows more time to debrief the last dive or brief the next. Just my $.99 super value meal.... sdgregory 0 #15 January 24, 2004 1. Noone on earth packs slower than I do (and my lines are color coded!) 2. I would rather spend the time drinking a coke/chatting with friends. 3. I pack so slow you could drive to pheonix from tuscan and back and I might have the canopy flaked. I'll practice my packing at home when there is no rush and try to learn better techniques and increase my speed. Once I can get my pack job down to fifteen 20 minutes I will pack for myself and save the 20 bucks for 4 pack jobs and get another jump. When it takes as long as I do a four jump day becomes and exhausting experience and I always feel rushed. Ruins the fun. And fun is what it is all about. Or am I mistaken? garyharbird 0 #17 January 24, 2004 Doing Tandem video and aff back to back all day I have to have a packer or I will only do 10 jumps aday instead of 15-20. Yeah ray When I used to film a team we would get out at 10000 and sometimes i would pack myself, but like you said it gets old fast Gary
Vertifly 0 #18 January 25, 2004 My answer option wasn't there. It's all relative. Four years ago, I couldn't afford it. Now, I can. Plain and simple. Of course, if there aren't any packers on the DZ that I feel comfortable with..... $$$$ or not - I'm packing for myself.

flyangel2 2 #20 January 25, 2004 Couldn't vote, cause you didn't have my reason. The only time I use a packer, is when the local packers here are working off money or an item owed to me. IE, one packer worked off a cypress. When I LO at the WFFC, because of being so busy, and it being so hot, I use a packer that is working off his/her expense to get them there and home. BTW, I also feed the packer that I take with me.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. flyangel2 2 #21 January 25, 2004 Quoteonly one say that the packer packs better Not all the time in my experience. When I'm doing big ways, I like to pack for myself. Then I know what kind of opening I'm going to get, and if it's going to be on head. rocketdog 0 #22 January 25, 2004 i think its important to know how to pack your own canopy.... HUGE PET PEEVE if you can't! although -- if i had the $$$ to throw away after every jump i'd probably have a packer too : ) it can be hard on the back after a full day of jumping... see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com
