Skyvan question

You may get tired of it.

Skyvans(my perspective)

Noisy.
Stinky.
Hot (low airflow)
Hard to spot.
PITA Door.
Did I mention Noisy?
Scary to land with.

Much prefer Twin Otters, and believe it or not, the Cessna Caravan and Grand Caravan are still my favorite A/C to jump!

And they're fun for boogies and fun for folks that don't get to jump them very often or if ever. So I was trying to figure out where they were, so I knew.

Personally, I really enjoy jumping Skyvans and CASAs, but actually enjoy Skyvans a bit more (call me weird).

They got a Porter in Deland last year and the teams used it to train for the World Champs. It was good for fun jumpers during the busy season because that meant we got the Otter or Skyvan (which I prefer). Last weekend I went to the dz and the Russian 8-way team was there. I mentioned to a friend that I was so glad they would be on the Porter, so I could get on the Skyvan that was running. He said, "nope, they're jumping out of a helicopter this year and are training in the van." I was so crushed, and it took me forever to believe him!

That's Picton, south of Sydney. And SkyVans are a great platform to step off when in a wingsuit.

I also jumped a skyvan over Jeddah in Saudi Arabia a couple years back. They were display jumps as a part of the annual Jeddah Festival. Apart from me as the token expat, all the jumpers were saudi - a great bunch of guys. The following year at the Jeddah Festival we used tail-gate Kawasaki choppers - also lots of fun.

Dude, listen don't tell anyone, but here in the land of the multiple big turbines (Perris Valley, and Elsinore) I MISS those sardine cans. I like doing 182 jumps from time to time!

There's never been a better aerial jungle gym built.

Can't beat it for SLOW hop and pops either.

And heck anywhere they fly a C-182 I guarantee the newer jumpers are more likely to be able to spot than here.

Launching a 4 way from a 182 is such a good feeling of accomplishment!

A 4 way birdman flock from a C-182 ain't bad either.

Hanging from the wing strut, landing gear, upside down from the wing, launching from the wing tip, climbing ON TOP of the wing. Wow.

A great vibe climbing to Altitude with 2 or 3 of your friends, chatting and having fun with the pilot.

The sound and smell. The heater burning your back in the winter (against the dash).

The pilot flying around you under canopy when you pull a little high.

Watching the sun start to set from the step! It's like the most private balcony in the world.

No one yelling GO! GO! GO! GO!.

No go arounds.

The rattle, shake, and pur of take off.

Hmmmm. I really do miss 'em.

I think Jim Wallace has one. I'm gonna see......

I haven't jumped a turbine since October - Mullins In Wichita........ You think you're going through Withdrawl.....:D

I'm going to make the 7 hour pilgramage to the nearest turbine here in the next month, Since Freefall express lost their king air I have to go to Sullivan for their otter [:/]

That makes me so >:( when people do that. How the hell do the people up in the front of the plane know what's going on in the back. There could be another plane or a bad spot. Ugh. I just want to turn around and flip them off when they do that. >:(

JP, I loved reading your post. It brought back all kinds of memories for me when I was jumping out of a 182, 205, and a 206. And I have to agree with you about jumpers knowing how to spot that have been in the smaller planes. They aren't afraid to get their head out there and look at the spot.

Some comparisons to our 182s:

* You can to talk to your friends on the ride up? 182s are loud. I've had to settle for getting enough hearing protection and learning sign language.

* sound and smell. I agree here, nothing brings back all the weekend overhead airplane sounds I grew up with like a 182! And the smell of 100LL is tasty - I haven't gotten used to Jet A yet, and there's too much of it; 182 exhaust is more of a "dessert" smell, teasing your nose periodically.

* heater? You have a heater?

* 4-way launches: these are not only a great sense of accomplishment (especially if you are outside step, hanging on in the wind for what seems like forever), they're also very friendly. "Budge up - budge up - share a bit o' step, there!" The count is pretty easy, too - inside step just leaves when crotch bonks their helmets together. :)
One of my own: in a 182, it's easier to hang on during turbulence, zero-gee, etc.. This is the flip-side of having so little room - there's always three or four interior airplane surfaces to hang onto.

One of Eloys vans needs to orient the floor seating to face aft. I don't mind doin the door in the van while wingsuiting if I get enough notice and let the pilot know we need some xtra time before jump run to deal with it. I know you can have more people on the ramp on the CASA than you can have on the Van ramp ( 9 max).
And unlike a CASA you can hang some FF from the bar.

Yeah they're noisy, but ear plugs are dirt cheap and highly effective, I don't board the 'Van without them. I like that it's roomier than an Otter (I love Otters, but they're a little like being in a submarine with wings). It's just FUN to run out the back or launch a nice chunk exit.

Let's face it, when people start dissing a Skyvan it shows just how SPOILED some of us are...

However it's all perspective. I wasn't joking when I said I miss 182's. Nor am I joking that one of the things I've yet to do in this sport is to participate in a 10 way speed competition out of a DC-3. By the OLD rules!:o
