Newbie 0 #1 January 28, 2004 that's what it says on the website. Can someone confirm when this was decided, and what the factors were that made it the safetst? Just curious. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
mr2mk1g 10 #2 January 28, 2004 Its whats known as an advertising ploy. All DZ's are the "safest" DZ just like all canopies have "soft, on heading openings". Ah, they are probably pointing to the fact some statistic for the last time someone died there, but we all know that is more the luck of the draw for most DZ's as opposed to genuinely being the "safest". Newbie 0 #3 January 28, 2004 it says its "offically recognises" as the BPA's safest dz - implying it's more than just them saying they are the safest. Anyone got any info on this offical recognition - i.e. who/where it came from, and how it was judged? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

vt1977 0 #5 January 28, 2004 In that case, my canopy is “officially recognised” as the softest opening canopy on the market… my jumpsuit is “officially recognised” as the best fitting... and my container is “officially recognised” as being the most comfortable I’ll ever wear! Hmmmmmmm… I smells BS! Vicki

vt1977 0 #7 January 28, 2004 Sorry – nothing really meant by that, I was just taking the opportunity to take the p*ss out of skydiving sales bollox rather than your question! I too would be fascinated to see how this claim is justified! (Hopefully with a bit more substance than some of the equipment related claims…!) Newbie 0 #8 January 28, 2004 LOL no worries, i was just confused by what the point was you were trying to get across. I get it now though (the cold is not helping my brain thaw today). I figure you and m2kyg1 are probably right - it's marketing related stuff. Still i would have thought something like being officially recognised by the BPA and for something as stringent as safety, might mean that i missed some sort of "safety" awards at the AGM for dz's or something? I definitely don’t remember any safety awards being given out at the AGM – but then there’s a lot I don’t remember from the AGM! Seriously though, Sibson is a great DZ – I’ve only jumped there one weekend but the people are wonderful and they have lovely facilities. I’d probably go there a lot more if I lived closer! mr2mk1g 10 #10 January 28, 2004 Yeah, saying they are "officially recognised by the BPA as the safest DZ" is a little different from just saying "safest DZ". "Safest DZ" is clearly an advertising "puff" and legally speeking can be ignored. The statement they have, however, must be true or they could get themselves into trouble, at least with the BPA. I guess there must therefore have been some form of official recognition by the BPA as I cannot see any DZ being stupid enough to make up something like that. And ooops, I appear to have just crashed skydivesibson.com

mr2mk1g 10 #14 January 28, 2004 cold Ok, its not that bad but we are a lot more weather dependant than most american DZ's. Over the summer though its great. Many of the DZ's are ex military (two of the best are still military) and a lot of the instructors are ex-military which has its effect on the way they are run to a degree. Expect to get shouted at if you do something stupid - so simply follow the rules. Overall the atmos is great and the fact that there are onyl 5.5k skydivers over here in total leads to a very friendly, close-knit community.

s.meacock 0 #16 January 29, 2004 Hi, The decision to list Skydive Sibson as the UK's safest DZ on our website was based on our present & past history in the sport. There are several factors that go into a DZ becoming the "safest in the UK". These statistics would include major incidents such as fatalities & serious injury. Minor injuries. Malfunctions for students/tandem & experienced jumpers. Off DZ landings etc etc. Sibson has been lucky i agree. We have all been there when someone has had luck shining down on them. I've lost count! But the fact is Sibson has also had the luck of being run by John Meacock & Ronnie O'Brien for the last 3 decades. Their ability to run the DZ a safley as possible, along with the rest of the staff, has in my opinion kept us extremely safe (along with a large landing area) For instance. Our Tandem malfunction rate is 1 in 2500+. The national average is 1 in 250. We had no Student Static-Line malfunctions last year (well done Oli, Mike & Catt!). Our student injury rate if below 0.3% and there hasn't been a fatality here in the last 31 years (touch wood). We all agree that it's probably just a matter of time. But if i can quote Ronnie: "All you have to do as an Instructor is care. If you care every thing else will follow". For anyone interested there is a letter in our office from the BPA stating that our statisic show we are indeed the UK's safest DZ. Luck maybe, but not BS. If you're thinking of jumping here you'll be sure of a warm welcome, thorough gear & doc's check, DZ briefing & safe skies! Let us show you why we are the UK's leading DZ.
