Is it Possible?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

how easy is it to get a manifest / packing job in the US?? I know you guys have really strict entry regulations?

Can someone please let me know if they have gone through the process and if so any tips. I am hoping to come out next year in the spring and work and jump my way around

thanks:)

Some DZs are quite hungry for packers (ours for example). It can be tough to be mobile as a packer, and especially as a manifestor, as an element of trust for packers, and the training period for manifestors can take a while to develop. You would be better off using some contacts to find a DZ and plan on staying there for a while.

I don't reckon its too hard, just send out a bunch of emails. Probably help a bit if you were a rigger or something. I found it pretty easy to be mobile as a packer, as long as you're neat and fast.. people see that and trust you immediately!

Lodi, CA always needs packers and there seems to be a lot of SA folks down there... maybe give Bill a call.

Now is the time to find a job for the summer!

The problem is of course getting a visa. There's a standard 90 day delay, and the only visa i think you can get in on as a packer or manifester is called
H2-b I believe, temporary worker. If you want to manifest indefinitely it would be different, but I was looking for a summer job. There is also a statement that your employer has to make saying that there aren't enough US citizens who can do the job. It's very complicated.

Most DZ's don't care if you have a working visa! if you're packing its likely cash, so you really don't need one.

When I went to Oz to pack I got a six month tourist visa which was pretty esay. It took maybe two weeks to get.

If you can't get a job packing at a foreign DZ, you can always come over here and pick apples or something.

Caution: American DZs that are over-staffed will stick to the letter of the - antiquated - FAR that says that only licensed riggers can pack for other people. It would help if you earned an FAA Parachute Rigger's license. A rigger's ticket will also ensure employment on rainy days.
