Nightingale 0 #26 February 4, 2004 I make it a point to pack for myself at least once a day when I'm jumping. however, since I'm still very new at packing, and I want to be jumping, not packing, I'll pack once for myself and then pay a packer just because its faster and gets me back in the sky. skybytch 273 #27 February 4, 2004 I have more pack jobs than I do skydives - packing for money for a year or two has that effect sometimes. For me, right now, skydiving is more fun if I don't have to pack. Until I have more skydives than I do pack jobs I'm more than happy to pay someone else to sweat, break fingernails, etc on my behalf. mattsplat 0 #30 February 4, 2004 Depends if im on va-k or at my home DZ. If i'm on va-k im defenetly paying a packer im there to jump not to break a sweat. besides if you seen some of my trash packs you would feel safer with a packer.
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #31 February 4, 2004 QuoteI find using a packer adds to the excitement. I know I can pack my main properly, but can the packer? Oh hum, we'll find out at pull time that's funny shit! peacefuljeffrey wrote : Quote j/k I wasn't holding out the hope of finding that out in this way, but I'm not kidding about my camera being gone. If anyone knows someone who can't explain why they have suddenly acquired a Sony TRV-20, please PM me. hey, when was it taken? Was it the wknd of the boogie? Someone was missing a protrack that weekend, too! :( I pack my own, but you already know that. But, if Rory would pack for me i'd give it all up in a second lol! Angela. DanglesOZQld 0 #32 February 5, 2004 I usually pack my own gear when "working" like doing Tandem Videos and stills because it really isn't that hard to dub the vid and pack at the same time. When doing Tandems we mostly have someone else pack them for us. I have no problems getting someone else to pack either way. BSBD -Mark. "A Scar is just a Tattoo with a story!!!" peacefuljeffrey 0 #33 February 5, 2004 Quotelearn to pack for yourself - it saves money and - eventually - time. 3 or 4 packjobs = 1 jump. After a few dozen pack jobs you will speed up. After 100, it will be pie. Not to mention the benefits it brings in knowing/checking your gear as you stated. if you do use a packer and get good service/friendly advice, tip them. They tend to appreciate that I have a plan, since I was feeling self-conscious about that very subject. I felt like I was shorting some of the DZ employees who spent time with me packing, but who didn't actually pack for me, and I kept thinking, "Well, this is awkward. Do I give him money now or what?" I'm gonna just show up with maybe one or two cases and announce that it's in appreciation for all the time and help spent on me in "unofficial" capacity. I'll make sure that before all the crowd get it, that the handful of really appreciated helpers get theirs first. If you know me and are gonna be around my DZ, don't blow the surprise. I'm also gonna probably make a big pot of chili for this weekend. ---Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" peacefuljeffrey 0 #34 February 5, 2004 QuoteI think that you guys should use packers. You come out to the DZ to relax and have fun.. right??? The more money packers make, the more they can jump, the better skydivers they are, so when you hire a packer, you're also paying to increase the talent of regular jump-bums on the DZ! Hiring a packer is just a really good thing all around. It gets you up in the air quicker, it saves your energy for jumping and drinking, you're directly supporting the local economy, and it helps to increase the talent level at your local dz! Yes, but if I spend that same money on my OWN jump tickets, I myself become a better jumper -- and that has a little more bearing on my safety than whether other jumpers improve -- not that I don't want other jumpers to continue to learn too. Getting more jumps (via having more money) is a good way for ME to contribute more talent to the level at my local DZ. ---Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Someone was missing a protrack that weekend, too! :( Angela. It was back in December, I think. I was on Kim's 500th jump - a hybrid, can ya believe they invited me in on a hybrid (which I then screwed up by getting the piece spinning!). I brought the camera out the following weekend to firewire the video. I never got that done, and then forgot I'd brought the camera with me, so I never packed it up to take home with my other stuff. A week later, it was not found around the DZ. This was a $1500-when-new camera that was left to me when my mom died, too. I'm mad at myself for forgetting it, and pissed off that some piece of shit scumbag thought it's just fine to take something like that. It's been suggested that it may have been taken by some tandem's peeps. It's hard for me to imagine a fellow SoBeer would do such a thing, but one never knows... Then stupid me, I've been so blase about it that I haven't ever put up "Lost...reward" posters about it. ---Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... SkydiveNFlorida 0 #36 February 5, 2004 That's a shame, Jeffrey! :( Do you have a gear bag yet? it really helped me once I got a gear bag, the only thing i've lost since is my pack tool. I keep everything in the gear bag. QuoteIf you know me and are gonna be around my DZ, don't blow the surprise. I'm also gonna probably make a big pot of chili for this weekend. taz9420 0 #37 February 6, 2004 I made the mistake of letting someone pack for me all the time soon after I got my A Lic. After the laziness settled in, I lost the skill completely. Now, I pack on my own. I have a golden rule with myself: Stay away from packers and do it yourself.
