Travelling with Hardware?

Recommended Posts

OK, maybe not exactly skydiving related, but I figure a lot of people here might be able to answer this question.[:/]

Has anyone with hardware had any problems travelling lately? With the increased security and higher settings on the metal detectors?

I broke my ankle 11/1, I've got a plate and a whole bunch of screws in there. I'm going on vacation next month and I was wondering if it would be worthwhile or necessary to got a note or card from my doc.

I have 2 rods and 6 screrws in my back. I have had only one problem so far since 9/11. In Frankfurt Germany when they did the hand wand my metal kept setting it off. The guy was looking at my belt line on my pants looking for something. I just showed him the scar and he was fine with it. Other then that I have had no problems.

What could possibly go wrong?

That's what I thought! There's a broken leg message board with a lot of whiny paranoid people who insist you should carry a card from your surgeon! I thought the scar and the still ugly ankle would be sufficient!

Thanks guys!;)

I'm sure you won't be the first, and not the last to ever set of the alarm system at airport security. I think security handles that better then they do rigs. I had tons of metal in my ankle and never had a problem. Relax and have a good time on your vacation.

I was kind of disappointed my two plates and 11 screws in my ankle didn't set it off.:(

In Munich the hand wand was actually going off when it went over my ankle but the guy ignored it. First time I flew and first time I flew after 9/11 I actually carried one of my xrays. Of couse they could just run you through the carry on scanner.;)

Your ankle probably won't be enough to set it off. I can get through the walk through detector.

I've always wanted to have an all "bionic" load at the convention. I think we have an 8 way on our small Cessna DZ.

I personally have not. Aside from having to go through the extra search. I tell them that I have a hip replacement and they just wave me by. The note will do nothing for you. They are still going to double check.

How did you break your ankle? B|
