groundpounder 0 #1 February 12, 2004 I'm new, and just starting to buy my gear. Do I need to have a visual altimeter? Or can I just have an audible dive comp inside my helmet? If I do need a wrist-mount alti, what do y'all recommend?
Nightingale 0 #2 February 12, 2004 you need a visual alti, especially if you're new. sometimes you don't hear your audible, and they don't always work. you can't rely on them. a visual alti is a little more reliable, but the best alti, of course, is your eyes. as always, ask your instructors. GeeeeeeFly 0 #3 February 12, 2004 It's your responsibitly to other jumpers to be aware of your altitude, as a saftey precausion...Thus said it would be good to have visual as well as your audible... jb092 0 #4 February 12, 2004 I would recommend an altimaster, I have had mine for 9 years and counting. What could possibly go wrong?
ZoneRat 0 #5 February 12, 2004 Nope. Gotta have a visual alti. Ya never know when your audible batteries might die. Plus it's good to know the altitude if you're responding a a malfunction, figuring out when to fly to your holding area, cross wind and turn to final. Sorry dude, but you're gonna have to buy one. velo90 0 #8 February 12, 2004 Unless you jump in Poland where apparently you don't need any sort of Alti, I would highly recommend getting a visual alti. Then if you intend on doing freefly getting at least one audible as well.
skydiverek 63 #9 February 12, 2004 QuoteUnless you jump in Poland where apparently you don't need any sort of Alti. Yeah, unfortunately it is true... I started my skydiving in Poland (1996), and there it was/is normal to do your first 10 jumps as static line (most common training method) with no Altimeter, no RSL, no AAD, no goggles, plus round main and round reserve. That was/is normal and legal...
