After student status student???

Recommended Posts

I was arguing with a coach friend of mine and he insists that after student status (jump 8 or 9) that they are still considered students. I consider them off student status at that point.

He did mention the SIM calls them students...

What do you consider them?

I'm going to pretend that I'm SkymonkeyOne right now, as I know exactly what his answer would be. They are considered students until they get their proficiency card completely signed off and have become a licensed skydiver. ;)

According the ISP, all jumpers who do not possess the A license are on student status.
Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off.

Sorry, you lose. :P Like everybody's told you, they're students until they have an A, unless you're talking about operating completely outside USPA boundaries.

They're still students, they're just not in the AFF level anymore, so there's no organized lesson before each jump.

What do you call coach jumps? I think I do an organized lesson with my students;)

I've seen it done many times. Jumper graduated AFF and is in a big hurry to get their A license. They get coaching on every jump and improve their flying. IMO I do an organized lesson before every jump with these jumpers. Even on a hop n pop, just cause I didn't go out the door with them, doesn't mean I didn't do a lesson plan with TLO with them.

I get some kind of coaching before I go up on every jump. . .The instructors at Elsinore like to make sure they give us some kind of instruction. . .I am no longer doing AFF but definitely am a student till I get my A license. . .

Well, when I finished AFF a few years ago, there was no such thing as a coaches rating, and no card to fill out. You just got things signed off in the log book and the S&TA checked it when you said you were done.

I didn't do a single "coached" jump until after I had my A. (1) I couldn't afford it after AFF and (2) renting gear was still damned expensive.

Now I get coaching/training when I can from visiting hot shots, and I happily trade beer for a well coached jump from regulars, but it's not the same as what a preA newbie needs.

[edit] I still got my A on exactly 20 jumps without the coaching.

I tend to call that advice, not coaching. To me, coaching involves more time on the ground than the plane ride, jump, and repack take together.

Student, until you receive A License. Off AFF Student status when finished with AFF, but student till you get A.
