This forum's guidelines are getting fuzzy...

Recommended Posts

I understand and agree with the need to monitor and maintain different forum's guidelines, but I am at a loss recently about some of the posts that are getting moved out of this forum (usually into Talk Back).

The listed description of the General Skydiving Discussions forum is: "Have a skydiving related question? Get a skydiving related answer here. If your post is related to another topical forum, please post there. If it's not related to skydiving, please post in Talk Back"

Some recently moved threads include ones about:
***Bad Drop Zone experiences versus Drop Zones that you favour.
***Gear Store experiences
***Skydiving Movies.com
***Kids and skydiving
***Directions to Skyventure wind tunnel
***Directions to Z Hills
***Regaining fitness for skydiving

All these posts seem to safely fall in the realm of "general" skydiving discussions. They do not seem to fall into the description of Talk Balk which is: "Anything non-skydiving related should be discussed here! Politics, relationships, soap box, etc..."

So enlighten me, what is up? I enjoy and appreciate the relative serious and professional nature of these forums (as opposed to rec.skydiving- which I also peruse) but I am at a loss to figure out why all of these posts are being moved. It is a GENERAL discussion forum. Thoughts anyone?

Many of you have come to the wrong conclusion that this is a sort of "Talkback 2". If your post has nothing to do with the physical act of skydiving, then you need to take it to Talkback. The "Mike Mullins" thread was a perfect example of that. If it involves learning a new maneuver in your AFF training, then post it in "Safety and Training". If it's a thread in any way associated with gear, then post it in "Gear and Rigging."

Taken from the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

Sometimes a thread will start out as being related to skydiving but then it turns into something that should be in Talkback, not in a topical forum (which this is). This happens when folks feel compelled to post jokes and one liners in what started as a serious topic. That's known as "noise" and it makes it hard for people to get to the "signal."

If everyone would stop and think about which forum they are in prior to posting a thread or a reply you'd see far fewer threads being moved to Talkback.

Why hello Ms Bytch, long time no talk to! I still maintain that these (and others) maybe should not be moved. As stated earlier, Talk Back says "not skydiving related", and General says "Skydiving related", not "related to the act of skydiving". There are plenty of posts in General such as the one about "who is this girl...I met her at so-and-so and can't remember her name" that don't get moved. It seems that this forum may be leaning to more regulation than skydiving itself has. Just a thought is all.

Incorrect assumption and clearly taking your definition out of context. This forum is for general discussions on the physical act of skydiving which do not fit into the other "specified" forums. Talkback is exactly where other philosophical skydiving discussions go, along with everything else people care to post. Talkback would be a much better place if people would use it as a place to shoot the shit about skydiving stuff. For some time now, though, it has just been used as place to argue about politics and religion. Just because you see that stuff there is no reason to not post your skydiving/dropzone related stuff. Re-read the sticky post at the top of this forum. Read it as many times as it takes to understand it.

The information in that "sticky" thread needs to be put into the descriptions of the Talk Back and General Skydiving Discussion forums. General Skydiving Discussion is not for any "skydiving related questions" like its description says, (only the physical act) and talkback is not only for "non-skydiving related" things.

Oh, and this thread needs to be moved to either talkback or "suggestions and feedback"

This may not be a democracy, but our all-powerful leader may change the rules to make this a more pleasant experience for visitors. General Skydiving may not be a "skydiving talkback," but in my opinion, it should be. Just wondering if anyone else feels that way too. I don't THINK ya can get banned for this sort of talk...

I agree that the current definition is kind of fuzzy, for me at least I see threads that haven't been moved that don't relate to the physical act any more than ones that did get moved. I'm not trying to knock your efforts, Chuck, I'm just saying to me the lines are still a little blurry, which is more a knock on my own understanding that your moderating...

I agree, to some extent. And cut those one-liners out of your posts or you're banned!

ban this:P:D:ph34r:.

Sorry had to do a stupid one liner just cuz it fit in this thread but not in this forum.

So in a way, I broke the rules without actually breaking them.

Oh damn, now it ain't a one liner anymore. Guess we need to move this to swooping and canopy control:D.

I think the rules need changing! Anyone else agree?

That, or the forum's title needs to be changed. "General Skydiving Discussions" implies (I think), that anything skydiving related, but not suitable for another forum, belongs here. TalkBack is too busy to post anything of substance, if there aren't a lot of responses to a post it'll be on page 2 in a matter of hours.

do you only talk about skydiving around the fire? while your hanging out after the beer lights on??

Talk back is the fire of this virtual dropzone, a place to meet, hang out with, discuss and argue about everything and nothing skydiving related or not...sure some of the discussions get out of hand, and lots of things are posted that I consider drivel, but its easy to not read, or not participate in them...Talk back is where i go to chill and relax, the other forums are where i go to learn and ask questions from a wider variety of skydivers than i can meet at the DZs i visit...

without talkback this site would not have developed into the community it is now, no matter what anyone thinks about any (or all) of the topics that pour through it...

ps this thread belongs in Talkback ;)

Hi Big M

Glad I'm not the Forum police hard to make everyone happy.

IMO in regards to some of the threads you mentioned the moderators showed a lot of restraint by not yanking them sooner.

Where does a "General Skydiving" troll with negative vibes belong?:S I bit on one and should have known better:(. Glad it got moved but that's just my opinion which don't mean squat.

R.I.P.

It is absolutely not my fault that Talkback has degraded into an almost rec.skydiving malae and that it's hard to find the signal through the noise. Blame that on all the people who choose to post the political/religious/anti-whatever threads and those who propagate them. I don't know about the rest of you, but at the boogies I go to and the dropzones I hang out at those are not the subjects of discussion. Blame those threads on your not being able to find the skydiving chit-chat discussions which have merit. We already have enough forums on this site; we just need to do a better job of preventing fluff overload in the one place where a majority of members spend the most of their time (talkback). We moderators moving posts to that forum ought to be enough of a prompt to effect a change, but instead we get people demanding that we change the rules. The guidelines of this forum have only become "fuzzy" because we have not been able to keep up with all the fluff that has been seeping into it. Let enough people see a forum in a diluted state for long enough and all of a sudden they get irate when we step in and cull out the tumor. This forum was added some time ago to give people who had genuine skydiving discussions (which didn't fit into the other specified forums) a place to put their posts which were clearly a bit more serious than "talkback". If we created a new forum called "skydiving talkback", then the current talkback forum would become absolutely useless (as far as a skydiving site goes) and simply a tax on the bandwidth of this privately owned site. There would be no "value added" in doing so.

We do the best we can to keep the tone of the forums inline with the descriptions. We try our best to prevent complete anarchy, as allowing it would simply lower the hard-earned credibility the site has earned over the years. It's this type of moderation that separates this site from ALL of the other skydiving related sites.

Chuck

PS: I will leave this thread here for a bit, then probably move it to talkback at the end of the day after everyone gets a chance to read it here.

"Serious" is the key word here I think. If you read the description of the forum it says "get a skydiving related answer." To me that means that I should be able to open a thread in this forum and read it without having to filter through a bunch of "noise" (ie attempts at humor or personal messages to other users) to find the "signal" (ie a serious answer to a serious question).

We all forget which forum we're posting in on occasion. We're human, it happens, and I certainly don't mind moving or removing the occasional "mistake." Occasional being the operative word...

What I'd love to see is everyone trying their best to do as Chuck and Sangiro requested in the post that is sticky at the top of this forum - Think before you Post. Not just in this forum but in all the topical forums. Whether you are posting a new thread or replying to someone else, think before hitting the Post Reply button. Is what you typed adding signal to the discussion, or is it merely adding noise? If it's noise, please refrain from posting it.

One last impassioned plea to create some clarity.

Chuck (and other moderators) please read this carefully and make an honest effort to see what I (and others) are trying to convey.

First of all, I really do appreciate the legitimacy of this site, and the time & efforts of the moderators. I sincerely mean that. That being said we HAVE forums for the "physical acts of skydiving". They are: Relative Work / Freeflying / Canopy Relative Work / Wing Suit Flying / Swooping, etc. Those deal with the specific physical acts of skydiving.

I did not coin the phrase (description) of this forum as a sort of "Talk Back 2" and I am not sure that I like it (because of the negative connotations associated with it) but the fact remains that it is and probably should be something of that nature. Skydivingmovies.com...kids and skydiving...regaining fitness for skydiving... those certainly seem like acceptable subjects for a forum such as General Skydiving Discussions. It is where I would go to look for those type answers and those type of questions. Want to talk about how to launch a meeker, don't necessarily post it in General skydiving discussions, we HAVE a forum for that- post it in Relative Work (see how that works?). Want to ask a loose question about DZ's, do you tip your packer... or the like, then THIS is the place. It is a GENERAL discussion forum.

One last comment on that nasty, ugly Talk Back forum- it does serve a valuable purpose in that it gives us skydivers a place to post, vent, etc. to other skydivers without cluttering the skydiving specific forums.
I am not just trying to stir the pot here. I actually enjoy, use, and respect this site. The length of this post is testament to that (especially if you knew how attrocious my typing skills are). I just ask that those empowered give my thoughts (and many others that agree) serious consideration.

Another thought about how we moderate this forum: The hottest thread in this forum right now is the one posted recently by Jan entitled "Who Lives and Who Dies". It CERTAINLY does not deal with the physical act of skydiving and has been left alone. Why, because a respected member posted it? Maybe. But probably because it belongs in a General Discussion forum. It would be sad for a thread of that depth to be lost and buried in Talk Back. Yet it doesn't have anything to do with "the physical act of skydiving". By that standard, it should be moved somewhere else.

???? It DOES deal with the physical act of skydiving.
An act that can leave you physically impaired - on CRW jumps, on Wingsuitjumps, on Freefly jumps, on RW jumps, style & accuracy jumps, swooping jumps - all the disciplines have this in common.

Now if we, starting with a HIV-positive tandemmaster, moved to a poll about whether the students should be informed on the TM's HIV condition, another poll about whether the students should be informed about all contagious diseases roaming the DZ and ending with a poll about fellow passengers with HIV on public transport - we went of topic and the moderators should step in. (By removing the whole bunch in one clean sweep - but that's another matter...)

Besides, moderating these forums must be like cleaning your hard disk...(or the average DZ's toilet after a particular good day of jumping with lots of "firsts"? :)
Chorus: "Its not easy, being green. Having to spend your days in the color of the leaves.."

The 'who lives and who dies thread' is right were it belongs.

You are misunderstanding a lot of what I said. First of all, I agree with you completely that the thread does belong in this forum. I said that according to the unwritten "physical act of skydiving law" would move it somewhere else, because the thread DOES NOT deal with anything physical. I quote:
"Is there a way to determine 'Who Lives and Who Dies?'

In an absolute sense, no there is no way to absolutely, positively know 'Who Lives and Who Dies?'

On another more intrinsic, emotional or sixth sense level, there are certain factors that tell us 'Who Lives and Who Dies?'"

Intrinsic, emotional, or sixth sense- that's the set up for the thread. Nothing to do with the PAS law. Don't go the wrong way with this- I love the thread, and most certainly am not picking on it. All I am really asking is that general skydiving discussions be allowed in the General Discussions forum.

I see your points and understand loud and clear. I for one will certainly try to remember that "general skydiving" is for skydiving related stuff and more importantly a place to get skydiving answers answered that do not fit in the other categories.

I will keep my smartass comments in talkback.

My apologies for any hand I have had in creating unnecessary noise.

I think there is a forum called "Gear and Rigging" You don't have to be a rigger to read and post there. Maybe take a lookie in there, I always find some great information.

BTW, the mods and HH work very hard keeping these forums run in the matter that HH would like them. If you have a problem about the way they want things done, don't get mad and all "crappy", just leave.
