pccoder 0 #1 March 20, 2004 Is it possible to flare a wingsuit to the point of completely losing any fall rate, if even only for a second? This is curiosity speaking, because if it is possible I can imagine you are aware of the next question, and how long before someone actually does it. Praetorian 1 #2 March 20, 2004 can't say if its possible or not, I'd bet you't have to dive to build up speed just before the flare to have enough energy to pull it off.. what I can say is I think it'll be a while and then even if the first one works (which I doubt) I'd bet on a body count ticking up for a while. piisfish 140 #3 March 20, 2004 maybe if you ask the question on the WS forum, you can get a quicker answer... AFAIK a 0m/s has not been achieved yet... but I might be wrong...scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
TomAiello 26 #4 March 20, 2004 Quote...I can imagine you are aware of the next question... Logically, the next question is "how much forward speed are you carrying when you achieve zero fall rate?" And the next question in that sequence might be: "and what would it feel like to do a face plant at that speed?" -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
pajarito 0 #5 March 21, 2004 I was thinking the same thing this morning. If you could somehow mimik the motions of a bird when they flare and land. I think they bring their tail in some, change the angle of attack of the wings, and push a few quick times. I know the weight to lift ratio is way off but maybe the descent rate could be stopped for a second and the energy could be bled off just like a canopy swoop. It would probably require a LOT of strength in the arms/chest as well as the thighs/abs. Maybe with some sort of lightweight robotic stuff to increase strength, it might be possible. Or, maybe I just need to go smoke some more crack...I don't know. It would be cool, though. For somebody else to do while I watched, I mean.
pajarito 0 #6 March 21, 2004 Maybe, while in flight, you could extend your wings with telescoping rods stored in the wings of your suit and provide more lift.....that's it.......looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
LouDiamond 1 #7 March 21, 2004 QuoteIs it possible to flare a wingsuit to the point of completely losing any fall rate, if even only for a second? While I don't have any data to show that I've ever completely lost fall rate it is possible to bring a suit to the stall point. Stalling the suit has a feeling, for probably less than a second, that you are hanging in the air and have stopped flying. Kind of like when the roller coaster gets to the top, right before the plunge. I think it is very easy and common for people to get out of an A/C and start flying without loosing any relative height to the A/C and in some cases fly above the A/C. If there was a way to measure what your asking I would guess that it would be for less than a second. The discussion of landing has been brought up many times in the wingsuit forum and the short version is it's not going to happen any time soon and I am not going to be the first one to intentionally try it"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
VectorBoy 0 #8 March 21, 2004 On the soul flyers DVD, in the first chapter, Loic fly's by a CReW stack nice and slow in his S-fly and it appears that he is climbing on them for just a second in just such a flare.
piisfish 140 #9 March 21, 2004 actually, what lou posted... about people flying over aircraft at the exit... with position and SPEED... you can. with enough speed you can also have a brick flying horizontal...scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM

If everything goes according to plan, Chuck will attempt his wingsuit-to-snow project in Winter 2004. Maybe not so long until somebody tries...then again, he has postponed the attemt before. Winter 2004 in New Zealand will be sometime may-august i guess. There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. ozthebum 0 #14 March 22, 2004 Quotewhere does he want to wear the skis ??? on his feet or along the body ?? Please excuse my ignorance, I don't know sh*t about birdman, but would skis on the feet work? Or even with the extra wind resistance would someone still be able to go fast enough horizontaly to get their optimum vertical speed? I've never paid attention to a birdman foot position, maybe i should go look at a pictutre.
