Tunnel recommendations

Recommended Posts

I'm a relatively new skydiver (85 jumps) looking to spend some time in a tunnel this summer. What I'm hoping to get is some advice on how I should approach this. Of course I could just book some time with a coach and go for it. Or I could try to identify a camp to go to. I'd really like to get the most overall learning/experience that I can. I'm don't see myself getting into competition 4-way, although I definitely want to improve those skills. I'm planning to start freeflying this year, so that would be another possible area to work on. Can someone give me some advice? Thanks!

Yes I'm aware of the website. I've also done searches in the forums and spent time reading what people have already said about tunnels and tunnel camps. I'm looking for some recommendations based on people's personal experience.

Sign up for a deluxe camp - Airspeed, XL, NSL, Skyventure - at this point what's important is you get started out right and all these guys can do it. Buy extra time also and try to go with a group. If a couple of you are naturals, it's easy to buy a little extra time and do the drills together - it's more cost effective.

www.tunnelcamp.com just to make it clicky for others. Brannan will take good care of you

If I were you I'd spend a season on good solid 4-way. Then next year get a coach at the tunnel for freeflying if you are still interested - this will take more hours to purchase to get the same benefit - essentially basic skill camp for 3 more disciplines (back, sit, headdown). But likely also worth it too.

I'm going next week for my third camp (1st two were NSL deluxe camps - phenominal) This time we are using a coach and setting up a big group. I'm hoping to get more basics and 4-way block drills while sharing with my teammates.

Personally, the camps have completely changed my skills and goals in this sport - for the best.

If you can make it next week to Orlando, send me a PM and you can join our group - we have people from 4 jumps to 5000 going. Both FF and mantis

I have done about 9 Airspeed camps (yup, seriously) and if you are looking to improve a lot then do one of those camps- the improvements you see in just a couple of days are huge. I would recommend the Orlando tunnel due to price as it is cheaper than Perris, especially if you are going to do extra evening time during the camp with an Airspeed coach.

I have not done any tunnel camps. I did do some time in the Orlando tunnel with one of the tunnel's coaches though. I can highly recommend this if you don't have the time/money to do an entire camp - I learned a LOT in less than thirty minutes of actual tunnel time.

Over beers after our first sessions we talked with him about the various camps that are offered there. He said what he recommends to people who have never done a camp is to do one of the Skyventure camps first, then do an Airspeed camp (or one of the other structured camps). His reasoning was that the Airspeed camps are structured so that everyone is working on the same thing at the same time - i.e. if it's the third hour in the tunnel everyone will be working on skill C regardless of if you didn't quite "get" skills A and B earlier or if you are already competent at skill C.

The Skyventure camps are geared toward what each participant wants to work on - i.e. if you want to spend the whole camp focusing on leg turns, that's what they will work with you on regardless of what the other participants in the camp are working on.

He said that those who do a Skyventure camp first and then do an Airspeed camp seem to him to be able to "keep up" in the Airspeed camps better than those with no prior tunnel camp experience.

I'd love to get peoples opinions on these two specific items:

1) Tunnel camp vs. Tunnel time with a coach

2) If you could only do one camp this year,
a) better to learn to sitfly in the tunnel and then improve your RW skills via skydiving
b) better to work on your RW skills in the tunnel and learn to sitfly via skydiving

1) A tunnel camp will generally cost you more than hiring a coach for the same amount of time, but you (generally) get more out of it. There are more people so each session is shorter allowing more brief and debrief time with the coach and with the video. The camps are also structured so there is a lot more besides just the tunnel time.

2) It all depends on what your goals are. If you want to be good at both then I'd suggest doing both in tunnel for half as long (which would mean hiring a coach rather than doing a camp.) Both your RW skills as well as your freefly skills will benefit tremendously from tunnel time, it is an invaluable tool for any orientation.

Basically it's your decision based on what your looking to get out of it and how much money you're willing to put into it. The more money and time you put in the more you'll get out :)
