can a big guy skydive safely?

Recommended Posts

wha? You'll do fine. I think theres a few people on this website that are avid skydivers that weigh as much as you. You just have to realize that you'll be loading the training canopies heavier than the instructors are used to students loading them so pay CLOSE attention to the training (not like you shouldnt anyhow :P). Just make your concerns known to the instructors and they'll tell you what you need. They might go grab weights to do the aff dives though :P:D:ph34r:

Everyone tells me that people my size shouldn't skydive.

Everyone who tells you that is wrong.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Right now I weigh in at slightly under 250.

Screw them!

I'm a weight lifter (and a beer drinker, great combo, eh?) that weighs in at 250lbs. I'm also an instructor and have nearly 700 jumps.

Tell the folks that are telling you that you can't do this they're wrong!

For instance, we (SD Aggieland) have a 300sq ft student canopy for guys our size...

As for injury? Well, its not a real safe sport, but are you *more* at a wrisk? I wouldn't think so.

One other question. When you say...

what does that mean exactly? Do you mean my weight will just be putting more load on the canopy and making me drop faster? or is loading a skydiving term? excuse my newbie-ness.

To you it means that you'll be going faster, both horizontally and vertically, than someone lighter under the same canopy. Don't worry too much about it, your dropzone will take good care of you.

Wingloading is a ratio of weight to canopy size.

If the student program is setup right, they'll have a 300sq ft or larger rig for guys your size. Even with the rig weight, you'd still keep that ratio under 1:1, which is good for a student.

Simply put, higher the wingloading, the faster the speed.

The faster the speed, the easier it is for you to get hurt.:S

Well, let the head "Anvil Brother" jump in here. I'm 6'6" and 240 lbs.. Been jumping off and on for the past 23 years. Recently met "Tall Guy" at the World Freefall Convention who is 6'9" and weighs in at 260.

Know several pushing 300# exit weight. If you decide to stay in the sport, please feel free to email me for gear recommendations at that time.

In the meantime, find a DZ with a Manta or Falcon 300 or Navigator 280 and similar size reserve. Your weight is not contrained by the main as mcuh as it us by the reserve weight limitations. That's the biggie.

Hell, just ask Gus and Harry if they are dead yet.

Couple a big bounders that love to skydive. Plus they are cooler than hell, and heavier than you.

Oh, except for the part when the steamroller pausie saw Gus naked. Oooo, Shiver.......

Sorry, you're not the head anvil anymore.;) I'm a 5'8", 265# out the door, fat-bastard and I do love to get my jump on. We'll have to get together for an anvil load the next time I'm around Tulsa.

Justin, you've gotten some excellent advice here, I really have nothing else to add.

Hey Kris! You gave me a few IAD jumps at Cushing before I switched to AFF at Lloyd's place in Skiatook. I too am an anvil. In fact Keith (head anvil) gave me his old jump suit. I'm 5' 10" and 225-235 (depending on the season). I fall like a rock, but enjoy it all.

Justin, my suggestion is the same as everyone else's. Your DZO should have a proper rig to train on -- and when you are trained - contact me-- I'll sell you my container w/ Raven3. That'll hold you!

Once while jumping IAD at Cushing they had another big boy, so he got the Manta and I got a Tandem rig!

:oHola! Yup, I definitely remember you...and the plane rides.;) 3 to a load in a plane that normally holds 5. That was a lot of beef on that plane between all of us.

The people here are all wrong.

Skydiving is only relatively safe for guys my size - 145lbs, 5 10. You need to be built like me (a flat, skinny rock climber) to skydive safely.

The reason being that IF you have a double mal, you can simply float to the ground like a leaf B|
