WrongWay 0 #1 June 7, 2004 Okay, so I'm out on a dive....I'm concentrating on what I'm trying to accomplish, whether it be staying in the leaders face on a flock, docking on a formation, whatever. I remember to breathe. I remember to relax. I remember to feel the air and be fluid. But of all the things in the world, I always, ALWAYS forget to SMILE!! Everybody keeps saying it looks really weird on video when I look so serious all the time. Any suggestions of what to do?? Brains 2 #4 June 7, 2004 Man, i know what you mean, i see video of myself and my face is always so serious. People have watched the video before and asked what i was mad about. People i jump with just say no he always looks like that. Saturday i hit my leg on the back of the door launching a two way flower, i started laughing and yelled at my partner, " I hit the fucking door!" he laughed and said "I know" I guess you had to be there but we were laughing and it was the best freefly dive of my life after that. Oh and, Quote don't know the answer to your question, but what is up with giving me the finger on our last skydive on Saturday?!?!?!?! Isn't that his break off signal?? Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
slug 1 #5 June 7, 2004 Hi Wrongway Practice the smile every chance you get: in the air, on the ground, in bed. With or without a cameraI think it's called muscle memory Don't forget we want a picture when you get the smile working R.I.P.

Quasimodem 0 #7 June 8, 2004 Please forgive a newbie for chiming in. (My first tandem isn't until Saturday) I was told to "paste" the smile on my face before exiting the plane. Is this realistic or am I gonna look like that painting of "The Scream? Quasi
Dougiefresh 0 #8 June 8, 2004 QuoteI was told to "paste" the smile on my face before exiting the plane. Won't be necessary, trust me. slug 1 #9 June 8, 2004 It's your jump and picture, IMO if your enjoying the jump show it and smile it'll just happen. If your not enjoying yourself well why fake it? unless you just want the picture for a macho bragging rights thing. Fear is nothing to be ashamed of. One lady on this websight has a great photo just prior to exiting the plane on her first tandem. The look on her face is real and imo priceless. We're talking pee in your pants terror! Since she posted the picture I think she enjoy's the real look on her face. Especially since she continued jumping and is now flying like a bird. R.i.P. R.i.P. riddler 0 #10 June 8, 2004 Yeah, don't worry about it. Not everyone smiles, especially when they're concentrating. It's not required. Look at Michael Jordan. Sticks out his tongue when he's playing. Probably having loads of fun, but you almost never see him smile.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

The111 1 #14 June 8, 2004 Hmm, I don't smile enough either, and not just while skydiving. I haven't jumped much lately but I watched the SkyVenture Challenge several weeks ago and if you ever see Juliana fly you will never forget her smile. After seeing that I swore to myself I was going to start smiling like that, I'm almost positive it would make you relax and fly better, in addition to looking better and enjoying yourself more. There was also this crazy little Japanese lady named Mitsumi I jumped with at DeLand because she barely spoke English and had no one to jump with. Turns out she was an awesome flier with 500+ sit jumps, and - get this - NO SIT DOCKS. I kept trying to dock with her and she'd give me her crazy trademark grin and dart away. On the ground I asked her why she didn't dock with me and she said, in very broken English, that she didn't know how. Anyway, moral of the story - when I saw her crazy grin during the jump I couldn't help but laugh myself and it DID make me fly better. So if you ever see a tiny little Japanese woman walking around with some crazy looking Da Kine freefly pants and a crazy shirt with 100's of little polar bears on it, that's Mitsumi - say hi for me and then make a jump with her. And FUCKING SMILE! www.WingsuitPhotos.com
Quasimodem 0 #15 June 8, 2004 I saw them! Thanks very much for sending them my way! If you'll watch this post, I will "return" them to you after Saturday's jump! It's supposed to rain in our part of Georgia Saturday. I just hope it clears up so that I can make my tandem. Unfortunately, all my friends are in Germany (where I am from), so it will be a solitary celebration. But a celebration it will be!!!!! Thanks for your good wishes, everyone! Quasimodem 0 #16 June 9, 2004 After finishing my first Marathon, I was so overcome with emotion, that I collapsed in tears from happiness. Does this happen with the first tandem- dive as well? If so, I guess I'd better pack a few extra Tempos, huh? We Europeans! You never know what we're gonna do!
skipro101 0 #17 June 9, 2004 I have the same "problem". I always look so serious. I devoted an entire dive to just relaxing, breathing, and smiling on a solo sit. It worked for that dive, but the next one, i was back to my old self. I think, at least for me, its because im not really relaxing. Someone pointed out that I might even be holding my breath, which i think is right! I think its just because I have to concentrate so hard to fly. One day I will relax, and i expect to have much more fun when I do.

Falko 0 #19 June 9, 2004 QuoteEverybody keeps saying it looks really weird on video when I look so serious all the time. Geez that's funny, I thought that of myself when I watched the video of my first 3-way HD-exit. (First time I actually stayed HD for 10 seconds) That look on my face just before exit was so serious, I remember thinking "Relax, have fun". And then it worked... see that smile? Man I had some fun!
