Huge difference in jump prices

Recommended Posts

I know this one may have already been beaten with a dead horse, but I made two hop n' pops this weekend (with 8 legal BASE jumps sandwiched in between them). On my first hop n' pop I paid $15 (that's right, it's not a type-o, $15 for 4k) and then on the 2nd jump (at a different DZ) I paid $9 for the same altitude.

What's up with that? [:/]

I was driving down to the DZ saturday and I topped off my tank when it was about half empty and gas was $1.839 a gallon....when I got home and filled 'er up it cost $1.859 a gallon. Not to mention I saw $1.899 at a different place on the way home!!!

I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

It is called a free market. $15 is a bit higher than I would expect, and $9 is a bit lower. There are many factors that dictate those prices. What were the aircraft? In turbines, a low exit altitude merely displaces a full price ticket, and adds the hassle of a jump run. Generally I'd expect a higher price for a jump out of a turbine and a relatively lower one for a jump from a C-182.

Well as for the $9 jump that DZ just had to raise the Tandem and AFF Jumps so us fun jumpers costs didn't go up($5 to get on the plane and $1 for every 1k). Fuel costs forced the price increase.

After learning that the Tandems keep my elevator ride cost down I make sure to talk with as many as possible and thank them for coming out, kick hack with them while they are waiting for there load etc...I just picked up a bunch of fliers to pass out, don't want my ticket to go up!;)

I have no Idea aobut the $15 jump. That is a bit steep

Hey I know it's a free market system so there's no need to state the obvious (not really slamming you, just trying to prevent more posts saying the same thing). It was just a really nice surprise when I was told that my hop n' pop at Skydive Ogden would only be $9 and it was out of a Caravan, not a C-182.

Just thought I'd stur the pot up a little that's all.

If you lease a plane a lot of plane owners charge per slot filled and not per altitude. One large fleet owner charges $14 to the DZ no matter if everyone gets out at 2000 or at 12000. The extra $ that the DZ charges you is the profit that the survive on. Another plane owner only charges $12 for his planes that I know of.

The DZ charging $15 for a hop n' pop owns their own airplane. This is not a leasing issue.

I think CatfishHunter hit the nail on the head. The cheaper DZ (Ogden) is charging their tandems more so that the fun jumpers can be charged less.

It can really depend on who owns the plane and how the billing is done. Some DZ who own their own planes have total control over pricing.
At our DZ, we pay a set amount for a set altitude. If 3 get out at 3000' and 1 gets out at 9000' we're charge the same as 4 at 9000'.

Just the way it is ... Maybe next contract ...

At my DZ if you wanted to do a hop n pop and nothing else it would cost you US$25.

It is AU$35 to the top or for an HnP. I have suggested they reduce the rate for Hop n Pops but to no avail.

Mind you it is only AU$30 if you buy tickets in batches of ten.

Just the way it is...
