AdD 1 #1 July 12, 2004 My DZO started me thinking the other day about the physics of skiing under canopy. He thinks he could do it with his Sabre 170, we (the staff) think it's too big. The whole arguement got me thinking about what a blast it would be to fool around with something like that. Personally I think the canopy would have to be pretty small and fairly high performance to work properly. Have any of you guys tried this, or know of someone I could talk to about it? I know my dad talked about doing it once but I don't even know what the sport would be called or where to find out about it.Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
piisfish 140 #2 July 12, 2004 according to my paragliding experience, the slower stalling canopy will be the earlier taking off canopy too. Might be easier to launch with skis rather than by foot down a hill/mountain. In the canopy control forum there is a very interesting thread about this subject. Just remember, as long as everything is allright, it is much fun. As soon as there is a problem, it's VERY dangerous. You're just playing very low... Low as in Low turn etc... Edited to add : WTF are you talking about skiing now, we're in july and the weather we have in Switz is more a November weather... 15 C degrees right now...scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
WFFC 1 #3 July 12, 2004 It's been done. The video isn't online unless Dave's got it hiding on his video site somewhere. Alex (can't recall last name) lauch his canopy at A-Basin a few years ago.
pilotdave 0 #4 July 12, 2004 Here's one: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=142. Wasn't there an article about para-skiing in a recent parachutist? I know I was reading about it somewhere... Dave
Casurf1978 0 #5 July 12, 2004 Check this out http://www.flyozone.com/ozkites/kframe.asp?page=http://www.flyozone.com/ozkites/ksnowkiting.htm Done it a few times this last winter, not with skydiving canopys, but with kites specifically designed for this. It's a freaking blast. I dont know if a canopy would be fast enough though, I know squat about canopys, but been kiteboarding for 4+ years now and know enough that manuvrability is key. Also you'll notice that these kites have 4 lines, two to trim the kite and two to control it. All attached to a bar.
AdD 1 #6 July 13, 2004 I'm pretty sure you'd need something that most people would never consider flying, like a really small velocity, vx or whatever. If you could front riser down the steep parts and just swoop the flat sections it would a hoot. Wipeouts would still suck though, and the harness inputs would be a nightmare.Life is ez On the dz Every jumper's dream 3 rigs and an airstream
pilotdave 0 #7 July 13, 2004 Para-ski has been around longer than modern canopies. I'm sure the slopes have gotten steeper though. Dave
Zenister 0 #8 July 13, 2004 saw some great video of the Team Xaos (Andy, Luke and Jeffro) doing that under their tiny xbraces in Washington state this year....looked like a hell of a lot of fun, but very little room for error... of course in good powder days i simply dont understand why anyone would want a canopy in the first place...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
