First cutaway

Recommended Posts

So I experienced my pre-second chop on Sunday morning.

Did a wonderful HD two-way Sunday just after noon (my first jump of the day). The freefall went great. We played Simon Says. We broke off at 5 grand, I pulled around 3 and a half.

Just after having been stood up, I knew something was not right. Felt like I was still falling too fast. Felt like line twists and there was a tendency to yaw to the right. Once it inflated a bit more, I could see I had a lineover choking off three or four of the right cells and the turning really started. I stopped the spin almost right away with the left rear riser to look and see how bad it was. I could not determine how many lines were over. It was a little shaky. I never released the breaks. I flared to near-stall with the rears and then tried to shake the right side free with a sort of 'skip rope' motion. But no success and the canopy was diving and spinning again.

I've already spun through 2 grand and I could feel the blood in my toes. By the third rotation, I grasped the handles. Peel, Punch, "Ca-ching!" and I'm flung horizontally. First thing in my mind is "Woa, should have thought about your body position!" as my arms flailed and my legs kicked a bit to get onto my belly. I punched silver "Ca-chunk!"... My flatline is giong off as I'm being stood up...Instantly I'm under a white reserve. Look ma! No handles! (I actually didn't notice I had chucked them until well after landing)

I look up and back at my Samurai. It remains inflated and doesn't look like it's interested in ever coming down. It's going to land on the other side of that forest... can't land with it.

Thanks to Brian who fallowed and landed with it. He also took continuous still shots of the free-bag as it fell right into the middle of West Nyle forest! (lol, I got eaten alive my mosquitoes trying to find it).

In retrospect what would I have done differently? Well, I definately would have released the breaks first and foremost. I admitedly fought the lineover with the risers long enough that I had no time to try and stall it with the toggles... something I was told could help much better than stalling with risers.

Also, think of body position AS I cutaway... not after.

No, it's true that there's no guarantee in being able to correct a lineover. But it might be correctable. Or, to put it another way, messing with it in the proper way for a little bit might correct it.

Key is to avoid messing with it too long. It sounds like goose was successful there. (Yay!) :)

Holy crap man, I leave and everything breaks:D

Cheers on surviving the cutaway. You did get your freebag back? If it landed in the forest near the runway, you're a brave man for venturing there.

I've got a serious question, too. Did you go through your hard deck on this one? What was your flatline set to? You have no RSL, right?

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

Pack neater? Not a slam, just that I've been told to really watch the placement of the stablizers to avoid line overs.:)

Nope, my hardeck is 1500. I pulled, then heard my third ditter warning, (set at 1500). I haven't once thought to myself I wasted any time.

No RSL. Not the most stable reserve pullin' position either though.

I didn't get the freebag back. It landed in the middle of the forest two fields on the other side of the DZ. Spent about an hour and a half feeding the mosquitoes in there. B| A friend of Mikes flew in with a Bi-plane on Sunday so he made a bunch of passes at tree-top level looking for it. He gave directions via radio to Max and I in the Jeep. We found two white garbage bags and a plastic bucket, but no freebag. [:/]

was this even worth fighting with? Isnt it true line overs are impossible to correct?

Well, I had time to fight it. And it looked possible. I guess I figured: Deploy a reserve here, deploy a reserve at harddeck, same difference. So long as I give it time to open and me time to land it safely.

I just kept telling myself: "Don't spend the rest of your life fighting this." ;)

Besides, nothing is impossible. What if I had a reserve malfunction? You bet I'd be fighting it.
