madeyebiohazard 0 #26 August 30, 2004 when I first started jumping I completely on accident rushing to put my rig on made this fatal mistake. and there wasn't anybody around to catch it becuase the weather was bad and the ceiling was at 4000 so me and another jumper talked the DZ into letting us do a hop and pop out of a cesna. The thing that saved me was the quality of the instructors that woked at this drop zone because they instilled in me the importance of always checking your gear before baording half way to alttitude and once before you exit so I caught my own indescretion when I stopped short of the plane and made my first check and man did that scare the hell out of me. If someone has an attitude about something like that then maybe they need to be grounded for a while. You must be fast cause you were flying when I past you

In general, the best approach is going to be to deploy normally and then cross your arms for deployment. Trying to re-thread a chest strap in freefall is one of those things that seems easy but just might take the rest of your life. Yep, I'm living proof that this method works. My rig slid all the way down to my elbows before I got it back up on my shoulders, threw the PC and crossed my arms as tight as I could. The older I get the less I care who I piss off.
