Backing in on a 104 way

Recommended Posts

This weekend we did some pretty amazing bigways at Perris, in sizes from 99 to 104. It included the unofficial record for the largest hybrid (104 I think), 3-4 completions and one second point. I predict we get at least one cover shot out of the pictures. They have to be seen to be believed.

My favorite dives were the last ones. We built an eight-way base with four wacker arms coming off it. At the end of each wacker was a six-way round, with lines linking them on the outside. It looked wildly improbable on the ground, but we went up, tried it three times and came within 3 grips of a completion on dive 3. Then the winds picked up and scrubbed the last few jumps so we never got the completion.

On this last dive, there were eight people (two people per 6-way) who basically had their backs to the base. Four of them (including myself) had to do a back-in, present a leg, then do a headswitch to pick up the base. It's the hardest move I've ever had to do on a big-way; like doing 4-way with 100 other people, none of whom are paying any attention to where you are. It was a blast. My neck hurts today from looking backwards over my shoulder at the base so much, but it was worth it for the visuals alone.

Also saw a bunch of DZ.commers, including Kallend and JumperConway, and spent many a night in the Bomb Shelter talking to old friends. A great weekend all around, despite the heat and the winds.

Hey Bill, I was opposite Conway and Amy in another of the 6-ways and backed in with Larry Henderson docking blind to the base. It was the hardest move I've ever made too! Only reference I had was plane captain from Elsinor (180 from the base who was setting up on our grip line through the base) when I was waiting to dock and the propeller line where Larry was to dock. My problem was when I made my head switch to the base, I must have been dropping my knees because we would immediately begin moving toward the base. Several times I thought we were going to funnel, but with the help of the propeller and other jumpers in the 6-way we could stop the move and stay level.

Larry asked me if I wanted to move out of the slot and of course I didn't, but I told him I would take any slot that would help us complete the damn thing. Duffy was going to try it on the 4th jump with me moving to the outer loop which is where I normally fly anyway. I think we had a great chance to complete on the 4th.

In the earlier, 2nd formation I had the honor of docking with DiabloPilot. Glad he was on my left because we really had to muscle that formation into shape several times.

What a great week!

Blue skies,

Jim

It better not be the one skydive I had to miss.

As an aside to everyone else - Mary missed one of the jumps because she had to take Barb to the hospital. She broke her clavicle on exit (she hit the door) but still managed to dock on the formation. After she landed she sat down, and they got Amy out to the landing area to take a look at her.

Barb's had a lot of bad luck over the past few years. But where other people might make excuses, she's simply always there in her slot. She's a pretty impressive woman.

Michael, you weren't around in the evenings when I was hanging out at the bar taking pictures. Then come Sunday when we were grounded you weren't there. I'll have to make sure I get a special picture of you ;)

Renee, you know how it goes. When some dirty old man tries to get into your shower, you got to do something to them to slow them down:ph34r:

Takes more than a concussion to slow me down, sweetie.;)

I was facing out right next to Bill and I can tell you it was the most challenging slot that I have ever had to fly in my life. I bet a hope 96way Diamond like they did in ELoy this year would be harder.

Bill is right, the visual from our slots was awesome. Not to mention the feeling of impending doom on e the first attempt at the formation as all 4 6 way stars started to float on the formation. I have never arched so hard in my life. Thank God everyone was able to punch it out and keep that thing in shape.

I didn't see any stills of that formation. The video was cool though.

Bill and I where sure that Kate and Tony wanted to get rid of us and the other out facing people. Why else would they put us there? Especially the VonNovack's. They both where in the same slot in different stars. ;)

HEY, what about our pic. And I'm not talking about the ones we're forbidden from revealing in public.

Here are some of mine.
