The111 1 #1 February 21, 2004 I've read the posts about the hazards associated with jumping with a head cold or clogged sinuses (exploding sinuses in freefall). I'm 95% over a head cold, I feel fine I'm just in that phase where my nose is still a little sniffly and I'm blowing it a lot (but it's not clogged and I can breath fine), almost the same as when my allergies are bothering me, and I know I've jumped like that before. I should be ok to jump, right? Not looking for any guarantees or promises, I won't take your word for the gospel or blame you if I die, just curious what anyone's thoughts are. I'm probably going to jump anyway unless someone says NO WAY DON'T DO IT!www.WingsuitPhotos.com

SkydiveNFlorida 0 #3 February 21, 2004 Take a sudafed and go jump:D hehe. I've jumped with clogged sinuses & ears, it can be no fun! I suggest taking something that clears your sinuses & ears up before jumping. But, you sound like you're pretty much there, anyhow. :) Angela

karenmeal 0 #5 February 21, 2004 I'd play it safe.. try a hop and pop first to see if it affects you. I know that even when I jump with a very very slight cold it is incredibly painful. I've gotten nose bleeds in freefall from jumping with a teeny little cold. (The only time in my life I've had nose bleed)s I always think, "I'm barely sniffling.. I'll be fine.." and then it hurts really bad. I know it doesn't affect everyone like this, but I think it would be worth it to jump from 5 grand or so to see if it hurts. I'm probably going to jump anyway unless someone says NO WAY DON'T DO IT! Different people react differently. No telling how you will react. My ears and sinuses clear very easily even when I have a bad cold. A friend gets ear pain just going up and down hills in the car when she has the slightest cold. I'd recommend playing it safe. Better to be on the ground wishing, etc. etc.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

samhussey 0 #9 February 21, 2004 Same with me on my first jump. All over the place. And it dried onto the goggles. And my eyebrows. I was so pumped from the jump though that I didnt notice until I got to the packing hangar.

pccoder 0 #11 February 21, 2004 Living in Florida I always suffer from sinus problems, trouble breathing from my nose, etc. I always seem to breathe better after jumping. Maybe more after SCUBA diving though. Either way, unless it's really killing you, it may just help clean all that garbage out. PcCoder.net
Casurf1978 0 #12 February 21, 2004 QuoteTake something to clean your goggles with. It happened to me once. It was not pretty. Happened to me on a coach jump. Slight congestion, but nothing major. Long story short, as soon as we jump out of the plane something covers up my left goggle. It's an AFF coach jump so we practice docking and I notice that at every dock my JM has this huge grin/joking smile on his face. I felt so damn embarrassed. EdC 0 #13 February 21, 2004 I was doing a solo so I was the only one who saw it, then I landed out a little so I could clean up. Big Ed

Yup, that's exactly what happened. I jumped, and even on the plane ride up I could just feel any minor congestion clearing and I could breathe perfect for the rest of the day.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
zahiv 0 #15 February 22, 2004 I jumped once with a clogged nose it did not hurt during freefall but everything came out my goggles and helmet got a bit messed up , beside that every thing was fine but then again every one reacts different ...And once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you long to return... blue sky Asaf
wingnut 0 #16 February 23, 2004 QuoteTake something to clean your goggles with. It happened to me once. It was not pretty. very true on that... i have jumped with cloged sinuses and it was not fun... very lucky i didn't blow my eardrums out.. but i have jumped very regularly with just a little congestion and well this one time i was doing a tandem video and my nose decided to clear itself all over my wide angle lens... luckly it didn't mess up the picture to bad and the video was still usable... only the experianced jumpers knew what the speck that apeared on the video really was. ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"
grega 0 #17 February 23, 2004 Before you go jumping, squeeze the nose, close your mouth and gently blow. If you can feel both eardrums (left and right) stretching/poping, that means that the tube that connects ears with nose ("eustahium tube" i don't know the english name for that ) is clean and you'll be fine. if you don't feel both eardrums stretching, then i wouldn't suggest jumping. it can cause severe pain and damage to your inner ear. Not to mention that you can loose orientation, like not knowing what's up and down. Imagine that in freefall "George just lucky i guess!"

He totally lost orientation, what's up, down, etc...

Beerlight 0 #20 February 25, 2004 There's been a post here regarding flying/jumping with congestion. Best advice, when in doubt, don't jump. Considering physiology is my area of expertise, if you'd like more info, ask away. Buck
