julesshrew 0 #1 November 21, 2004 Ok I have a suspected broken nose from making contact with an opponents knee with the bridge of my nose while playing football (soccer for our friends over the pond) last Sunday. Ive been told by the doctors that the pressure caused by climbing to even 3500ft could be quite painful to my sinuses As I also had concussion I havent jumped this week but has anyone else incurred a similar injury as I really could do with getting to jump next week as Ive been waiting 3 weeks now already to get manifested to do my first dummy pull but I dont want to get in the plane if by the time I need to exit Im going to be in pain and not be able to focus on getting a good jump

I jumped w/ a severe head cold a couple times, (nothing really like a broken nose) all I ended up with was a pretty bad headache when I was done..... but make no mistake about it, sinus problems and altitude do equal pain. another reason to wait (I dunno what, inside your nose has been injure), but your sinuses are connected to your inner ear, which controls your equilibrium. Levin 0 #3 November 21, 2004 i recommend an observer ride in the plane first. seriously recommend. the problem won't be so much on the plane ride up as it will be on the fall going down. after everyone has jumped ask the pilot to make a rapid descent. also ask him to pay attention to your face. if he sees your nose pouring blood then he needs to slow the decent and you need to wait a bit before jumping again. be sure to take some gauz or a rag. edit: typos
Stacy 0 #4 November 21, 2004 I jumped with a *very* broken nose at Rantoul '02. My nose was broken early in the day when I was kicked in teh face during a head down skydive. I rested through the day, iced, etc. I made a lower-altitude chopper jump that evening to test out the waters. The most difficulty I had was getting my full face helmet on. Other than that things weren't so bad. Definitely try out a hop and pop first to make sure there's no sinus blockages, etc. Seeing that much of my own blood in freefal *once* was plenty for me. mikecm469 1 #5 November 21, 2004 It depends on what exactly you're broken nose has affected. I've jumped with mine broken a few times. The first time I did, I had no pain. The second time, on the other hand, my entire head hurt. If you're going to try, I also suggest a hop-n-pop. I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid! Levin 0 #6 November 21, 2004 do you mean a broken nose or a busted nose? my idea of a broken nose is broken facial and sinus cavity bones which i think is a very bad idea to jump with. my idea of a busted nose is a bad nose bleed from busted blood vessels in your sinus cavity. bigway 4 #7 November 21, 2004 i have seen someone pass out when they landed because of the pain they had from a bad tooth. i think you would be daft jumping with a broken nose. Can you imagine relative wind hitting your nose for 60 seconds at 120 mph? Yeah, alot of pain, a lot of eye watering, what would be the point in skydiving, to hurt yourself more and maybe endanger yourself? The sky is not going anywhere, do the right thing and let it heal. Maybe if you wear a full face helmet like stacy did, it will not hurt, but remember you breath through your nose while skydiving belly to earth. Just chill, and do it when you are a 100%. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
dragon2 2 #8 November 21, 2004 I jumped a week after I broke my nose when landing my reserve. Was okay, even after the incedent while boarding: a guy tripped up another guy for fun, only he fell forward, hitting my NOSE with his fullface. OMG. Tears were streaming down my face, I didn't even get up out of the plane it was hurting so bad I just sat there. By the time we got to 12k I jumped.... Felt okay again. Jump went fine! OTOH, my nose still hurts a bit now and then, after almost 2 years... Not sure of the cause, but I suspect the 2nd bump ciel bleu, Saskia
Stacy 0 #9 November 21, 2004 Mine was most certainly broken, to this day I can feel where it healed up a little funny. I'm sure there were broken blood vessels, etc as well, as I got clobbered in teh face at HD speeds. I made sure I was able to blow out my nose without difficulty and clear my ears before jumping. julesshrew 0 #10 November 22, 2004 I think it might just be a small fracture but the hospital doesnt bother with xray to find out and only operates if the nose is visibly out of shape I just get regular moments where it feels like I have a bar rammed through the top of my nose kind of a dull throbbing feeling Well Im still on SL at the moment so no freefall to worry about and the DZ not open til Saturday which will of left me with 2 weeks of healing time. So fingers crossed
Levin 0 #11 November 22, 2004 if you are doing s/l's at the moent then i guess considering the broken nose that is a good thing. you have several jumps to go before you get a high enough altitude to really cause any problems if it is going to cause any at all. in the mean time try not to blow your nose or if you do, don't blow it very hard. that will only aggravate the injury.
